Cot or Moses basket

I was originally going to go with a Moses basket for baby when it arrives! But I saw this cot which the mattress height is adjustable so will be suitable til baby is much bigger. Did anyone go for a cot first and not a Moses basket at all? Sorry for the dumb questions I'm a first time mum and basically alone with it all 🤷‍♀️😂

I had a Moses basket for DS1 and he HATED it. Wouldn't settle in it at all. Moved him into his full size cot about 3/4 months. Better ...

DS2 we used a next2me until he was 6 months then he moved into his big cot in his own room.

Current pregnancy will be in The next2me again until about 6 months before moving to the cot.

Moses baskets only last a certain amount of time (depending on babies size) but some people do really well with them. Just depends on your baby.

I found the next to me easier to transfer baby in and out of especially middle of the night during feeds.

Depends if you can fit the cot in your bedroom! If you can I don't see why not, but baby might seem a bit lost in there! Moses basket is cosier

Dd2 wouldn't go in the moses basket, really was a waste of money. We had a next to me bedside crib and also a sleepyhead which she settled in and actually slept.
We didn't get a proper cot until we finally got round to doing the nursery up when she was about 6mths.

My daughter went straight into a cot however the cot we have is extendable. It starts out as a circular cot and then can be extended into the full size oval cot. She was happy in the circular cot until about eight months (quite a small baby) and when we extended the cot she didn't notice the transition as it was still her cot.

Cot. Too big for Moses basket so never got one. Used travel cot downstairs for naps. Babies slept in own rooms never had them in with me so space not an issue.

We've gone for a full size co-sleeper cot (120x60cm) that will take him through til he's 3 years old! It's a normal cot in which you leave one side off and choose the mattress height. You then add the extension that comes with it and it slots right up to your mattress.

When he goes to his own room, we'll use it as a normal cot and put the side bars back on. We'll use a baby nest or the pram for when he's in the living room.

I just couldn't see the point in paying for a mini co-sleeper or moses basket that he would grow out of in a few months.

Had a Moses basket initially. It came downstairs during the day & upstairs at night. It fitted fine in my bedroom. Then transferred baby & Moses basket into cot bed in his own bedroom & then let him sleep in the cotbed when had to pass the basket on to family who were expecting another dc. Ds was still q small but he never bothered at all being in that big cot. It wouldn't have fitted in my bedroom. I put him in the pram top downstairs during the day once we lost the basket. The other thing to consider is how easy it is for gp's to get baby out of a lower cot or travel cot. My cotbed was height adjustable. It was an utter bastard to drop the height on my own tho. Dm wouldn't have managed with a travel cot (too low). X

I had a hand-me down Moses basket (with new mattress) and a baby box (free) plus a cot. DD would only sleep alone in Moses basket and baby box during the day. They were in the room someone was in.

At night she would only sleep on me or my DP had to put his hand on her back. Then at 2 months she was put in her cot at night which is right next to the bed and slept through.

Friends and neighbours report similar issues with their children. By 3 months she had grown out of the Moses Basket and shortly afterwards the baby box. So unless someone gives you a Moses basket I wouldn't bother buying one.

Those cots that fasten onto the side of the bed are great especially if you plan to breast feed. babies can stay in them much longe than a Moses Basket because they are bigger and you don't have to get out of bed to feed the baby in the night.
If you plan to go straight into a big cot, do you have enough space to put it next to the bed?

beingmum39 · 29/07/2019 14:36

I bought both but my DS didn't like being it from the day I brought him home from hospital. He liked his cot and settled in that from the get go, so Moses basket became obsolete. Some babies prefer to feel closed in as it reminds them of time in womb so a Moses basket is always a good first choice...

We've got a crib rather than a moses basket for first months and got a cot bed in another room all ready to go. Moses basket for us we didn't want because they outgrow them faster.
Go with what works for you, because it's not the same for everyone. This is my first and I originally wanted a rocking crib but then a lady said to me about how when you transition them into their big cot/cot bed it's not moving so we just decided a normal crib would work with us.
