Yet another pram question, SORRY!

We have looked and looked and shopped and shopped, and are more clueless now than when we started I think!

So wondering if you lovely ladies could make any suggestions?

We are generally looking for:

  • something that will allow a newborn to lie flat but then also convert to a buggy/stroller for later
  • something that can be folded and put in the boot of a car.
  • something that can cope with off road situtations as we will be doing a lot of dog walking with it, through woods, tracks, beach etc (DH thinks this automatically means 3-wheeler but I'm not sure?)
  • unless the whole thing is v cheap, something that also incorporates a car seat.

We mostly walk or use the car so public transport is not an issue. I'd quite like to be able to plonk my shopping underneath which seems to rule out a Quinny.

DH likes the Jane Slalom Pro. I like the Mountain Buggy Urban Single but it's too dear once you add on all the add ons!

Pleeeeeeease help???!! Thanks!

We are personally going for this one which is the Graco Quatro Deluxe Travel System.

It has pushchair, carrycot and car seat. I do not know how it will fair off-road tho.

MadLabOwner · 31/07/2007 17:33

It is possible to get an underbasket type thing for a Quinny (definately for the Buzz, so I would have thought possible for the Speedi). However, do NOT get a Buzz if you intend to go offroad at all. I have trashed mine in mud and sand, and now use a third hand Urban Detour (£15 on Ebay) which is infinitely better off road. Think the Speedi is fine off road, and might be OK for you. No complaints about Quinny quality generally from me otherwise

Cheap Quinnys

hoxtonchick · 31/07/2007 17:43

get a mountain buggy, they are ace. not sure what add ons you'd need. maybe a carrycot, but you can pick them up pretty cheaply on e-bay.

witchandchips · 31/07/2007 17:54

I honestly would make things easier by buying a cheap second hand proper pram of the silver cross type (loads around in charity shops etc. ) for the first few months. With this for trips into town and a sling for walks you should be okay. Then get a buggy without the carrycot attachment when you've worked out what you life is going to be like

MadEyeMisdee · 31/07/2007 17:56

i'd say go for the mountasin buggy

TranquilaManana · 31/07/2007 17:59

mountain buggies are available on ebay second hand. they last forever so is a good option.
they also hold their price well, so you could get a new one (or second hand even) with intention to sell on later. you could also get the add-ons second hand.
tis the pram i never got but wished i had, IYSWIM.

abcbuggyco.nz (i think) do same quality same sort of thing. takes a while for shipping coz they make to order... but they are loveliscious and have lots of great addons. again hold price extremely well as only available direct from NZ.

TranquilaManana · 31/07/2007 18:00

witchandchips - not good option if ina nd out of car boot a lot tho.

hippopowell · 31/07/2007 18:00

I'd go for a Mountain Buggy. Brilliant things. Can get a carry cot if you want, although you don't really need to as the seat goes back to almost fully flat. You can get a car seat attchment as well. Excellent handling off & on road. Really sturdy as well. Look on eBay for a cheaper one.

MrsBadger · 31/07/2007 18:01

Maclaren MX3 with carseat? add carrycot if you'd rather newborn faced you, but seat is ok from birth.

Mothercare urban detour system? (ditto carrycot)

if you buy a system make sure the carseat is safe and fits your car properly otherwise it's a serious false economy.

NAB3 · 31/07/2007 18:05

We bought the Britax practicale with carry cot. Didn't bother with the pushchair attachment as we knew we would be getting an umbrella style buggy. Worked a treat. Basket for shopping, you can get the sport for bigger wheels and it looked great. Baby loved it.

MrsBadger · 31/07/2007 18:21

or there's a cheap Quinny Speedi here atm - get the Dreami carrycot and a Maxi Cosi Cabrio and you're away.

spugs · 31/07/2007 18:32

ive got a mothercare urban detour 3 wheeler with carrycot and car seat. i am also selling it as i m getting a buggy as im pregnant again and dont want to get it in and out of car (its not that heavy just me with mc parinoia )they are really good and not that pricy new

MuffinMclay · 31/07/2007 19:10

I have the Jane Slalom Pro and it really isn't good enough for off-road dog-walking. We got it for that purpose and have been disappointed. It is fine on relatively flat and dry paths, but is impossible to push on wet mud or sticky clay soil (just clogs up the wheels).

And we've had lots of punctures....

Meglet · 31/07/2007 19:51

We have the Mothercare Urban Detour too. But its pretty big, so doesn't fit many car boots. Very sturdy though. But get a puncture repair kit if you get a three wheeler though.

Gemy · 31/07/2007 19:59

We have the Phil&Teds E3 and it is excellent. We off-road all the time and the metal frame means it is very robust. I lays totally flat or mid way, or sat up. But, it is a bit pricey and the car seat you buy extra (plus the sun mesh and raincover etc)

www.philandteds.com

and you can buy an extra seat to make it a double buggy (which is what we're gonna have to do when our second LO arrives at christmas!)

LIZS · 31/07/2007 21:05

P and T's reduced on the nurseryandtoy website linked below too !

nappyaddict · 31/07/2007 21:36

if you are going to be doing lots of walking on the beach and in the woods a 3 wheeler is the way to go. i love the zooper boogie myself if you can get hold of one.
