Need some advice.

It is absolutely boiling here in the UK as we all know. I have a 2 day old. What am. I putting him in to sleep? I have him in a long sleeved light vest and an organic cotton swaddle.

Midwife was in today and told me he needs to just wear a vest in this heat yet in the hospital they wanted him in Willie hat and it was so warm. So Confused and overthinking everything

Any advice would be so much appreciated to a first time mum

Hello my darling, and congrats on the baby..
A very thin sleep suit or a vest but not with the swaddle. Or swaddle only if baby likes the cuddle effect.
A fan placed near the doorway to direct hot air out the window might be an idea..

cool wash cloth on hands and feet now and again,,
Best of luck and don’t forget to drink for your own hydration

Congratulations! I’d probably do a nappy and then the swaddle, without the vest. My DD was born during a heatwave although not as extreme as recently and that’s what we did for the first few weeks, she’s now 2.

Congratulations! I've been living in Australia for 6 years and my DS (now 2.5) was born at the height of the summer here. I would have him just in his nappy and sleeveless vest throughout the day and then at night would use just a muslin swaddle bag without the vest (he was a bit of a flailer and would wake himself if his arms weren't wrapped).
I would take the vest off and use a muslin cloth between us when I was feeding him too as we both got very hot and sticky otherwise. Agree with pp about watching your own hydration too, especially if you are BF.

Both my DSs were born here in the Caribbean and our house is "cooled" to about 28oc.

DS1 loves to be swaddled tight in a miracle blanket so I just used to put in a pamper and then wrap him.
DS2 didn't like swaddling so just did a pamper and sleep suit.

Congratulations! Babies like the warmth as they kept pretty warm inside you!

I have my 7 day old in a vest, one size bigger and a Muslin for a blanket. It is 23c in our bedroom.

My daughter was a week old during a heatwave back in 2017.. we just had her in a nappy 24/7! Overnight we’d sometimes pop a muslin over her. Our room was about 28 degrees, it’s horrible in the heat! She’s now a toddler & poor thing was dripping in sweat last night!

I agree with others a vest is fine. When babies are first born (when you were in hospital) they need more as they are used to body temperature which is why in hospital they told you to use a hat, it doesn't take long for them to adjust so it's not needed now. Just remember babies can't regulate their temperature as well as adults and check temperature by feeling their body or neck not hands and feet.

My baby is now 20 days old. I also worry that he will get cold but the last 2 nights he has just been in his nappy I haven't even swaddled him as he was far too hot when I did. My bedroom was reading at 25 degrees on his gro clock. Much more content in his nappy when we ditched the best and swaddle blanket x

Sorry for the late reply. It's been manic as you can imagine lol. Thanks all so much for your replies. We opted for vest and nice cotton swaddle and he has been absolutely fine. I think I've just been reading things and overthinking every single situation possible resulting in me having zero sleep, but all good now. Feel a lot more confident. Thanks again for your repliesFlowers
