Gestational diabetes

Hi everyone

I went for my 31 week appointment today and baby is measuring 34 weeks so has gone above the top line on my growth chart. My midwife tested my urine and it was completely clear, no sugar whatsoever, but she has sent me for a glucose tolerance test to check for gestational diabetes.

Could I still have gestational diabetes even though there was no sugar present in my urine? Could I just be having a big baby? My last baby was 7lb9oz at birth at 42 weeks.

Thanks x

I’m 27+5 and measuring 34 weeks. I too was sent for GTT test, but as I haven’t had a phone call I can’t have it.
You may or may not have it, measuring isn’t an exact science, but if you haven’t had the test before may be worth having it.
Some of us just carry big.

Thanks @Em39ma, hopefully we are both just carrying big then ☺️

Yes you could still have it.

I was the exact same as you though, baby measuring bigger but nothing else. Mine was negative, so I just had a few extra scans to check growth.

I had clear urine samples but was sent for a GTT due to having excess amniotic fluid. I had gestational diabetes. The excess fluid was connected to that and both problems eventually got under control with medication for the diabetes. Best to know if you have it, so you can eat accordingly and if necessary get medication if you need it.

I didn't get it picked up till I was sent for a growth scan at 36 weeks. Urine always fine.
Baby born 8lbs 6 at 39+6. Was going to be induced the next day.
First baby 7lb 5 at 38+6

Thank you everyone for sharing your experiences. I have to wait another week for my GTT as that’s the earliest they could do it ☹️ hopefully I will be referred for a growth scan too.

I’m having growth scans every couple of weeks. When I had mine last week, she was only just above the 50th percentile.
I think baby is long, I’m 5,7 and DH is 6foot. So neither are small.
I’m glad they are on top of everything, but sometimes they do like to scare us a bit.

I wouldn’t be hugely worried about how you measure with the midwife to be honest. I’m 33 weeks and measure around the 28week mark. I’ve had regular growth scans as my first was on the smaller side for full term.... but even this one isn’t crazy small and bigger than my first (based on their measure). I’m off the chart at the bottom end according to the midwife- when I’m actually really not with the growth scans If that makes sense?

It’s possible to have GDM without sugar in your urine. I’ve had GDM in both pregnancies and never had any sugar in my urine.

It’s also possible that you’re just having a bigger baby without having GDM. The two don’t always go together - both my babies were in the 7lbs so not big!

Thank you everyone for your advice and experiences. I’ll be worrying for another week now until my test 😰

Try not to worry. For a start, bump measuring isn’t that accurate (and growth scans can be fairly unreliable too).

If you do have GDM, it’s not the end of the world - there are varying degrees of severity and it can sometimes can be controlled by diet without the need for medication. Also it’s better that you know about it if you do have it, so your baby can be monitored for low blood sugar after birth.

Thanks for your reassurance @clettercletterthatsbetter. Yes I read about the low blood sugar in the baby so I’m glad I’m being checked. Thanks for your help x
