Sleeping on side hurts my hips

I keep waking up with really sore hips and pelvis so switch to right side then happens again. At some points I just switch to my back as it feels better for my hips and back! I know not ideal though.

Anyone else got this? Pregnancy pillow helps a bit.

I'm just starting to get this. Maybe the pillow helps, but I have also found some overlap between good nights and being active in the day. So, trying not to be glued to my desk at work for long periods. Otherwise, a quick nip downstairs / to the loo helps me settle again. Hope you find a way to ease it.

I have the same! Agree it tends to be worse on days where I've not done much so I'm trying to do lots of swimming and walking x

I had hip and pelvis pain from about 25 weeks onwards. My solution for sleep was just a lot of pillows! One between the knees helped to align my hips and pelvis when on my side, one behind me to stop me rolling, one in front to support my bump! Keeping a bit mobile during the day helped (i swayed on the spot a lot!) and just generally being careful and gentle with myself. I found that reclining without thinking about my position led to pain when i tried to move again.

this is one of the many common crap bits of pregnancy im afraid. 5th pregnancy here (13+4) and im suffering already too. its awful isnt it. no tips im afraid. just letting you know its normal and common and your not alone. ive tried alsorts in past and present.... swinging from ceiling light is my next option - sooo tired.

I have a pillow between my knees, thats only thing that helps a teeny tiny bit. its not nice is it.

I had this when I was pregnant. My fiancé used to massage my hip and it really relieved the pain. He had to press pretty hard and used circular movements.

I also saw a physio for PGP and wore a support belt during the day which I bought off amazon. Have you discussed your pain with your midwife? If you too have PGP she might be able to help or refer you to physio.

Try sleeping on top of a folded duvet - I find that with a pregnancy pillow really helps

annlee3817 · 25/07/2019 08:19

A pillow or cushion between the knees can help with this, I didn't get on with a giant pregnancy pillow as felt like too much going on, but found having a small one between the knees eased the pain.

ParadiseLaundry · 25/07/2019 08:29

Could you sleep sort of on your back but your bottom half resting on a pillow so your hips are not flat to the bed but you still feel like you're on your back?

I'm 38 weeks and the best way I have been able to get comfortable is sleeping on my front with my top half resting on pillows and my leg up at an angle to take the pressure off the bump.

Em39ma · 25/07/2019 09:52

I have hip, shin and ankle pain and shoulder pain too.
The pregnancy pillow made it 100 times worse. I now wake 6 times a night with pain, I swap to the other side.
Supposed to be getting some physio, but not heard yet.
They think mine is because I always slept face down before, the ligament etc don’t like being squashed

PuffsMummie · 25/07/2019 14:10

I get this and find sleeping with a normal pillow between my legs really helps. The pregnancy pillow is almost too puffy, I use a regular pancake pillow, really stabalises my hips.

Rememberallball · 25/07/2019 15:14

Whenever I try to sleep on my side the babies go into overdrive of movement and make me really uncomfortable not to mention I can’t settle in that position and have ended up awake till the early hours if I stay on my side. However, if I get comfortable on my back, I get off to sleep easily and can manage 4-6 hours. I use pillows to prop myself up into a semi sitting position so I’m not flat on my back!!

Peachee · 25/07/2019 15:25

I had/have this. I take two paracetamols before bed and then two early morning if I need it.
It’s absolute agony.

Frizzy1986 · 25/07/2019 16:08

I have this and have done for around 10 weeks. Finally remembered to tell my midwife and they've referred me to the physio team for a group session next week.
Think they just go through the changes in pregnancy and why you can get pain, along with what you should avoid doing, some exercises you can do and also about support belts.
I'm hoping it makes a difference as I didn't have any of this last time and my sleep is so appalling these days.

Waggily · 26/07/2019 20:08

I had this during my first pregnancy. I found a single duvet underneath the bottom sheet helped. And protected the bed when my waters went!

MostlyAmbridgeandcoffee · 26/07/2019 20:12

Agh this was the worst part of pregnancy for me - awful! It did go away as soon as had baby if that helps !

Triskaidekaphilia · 26/07/2019 23:11

I found the pregnancy pillow helped somewhat, eventually it seemed to just go around maybe 20 something weeks, not sure if it was always going to or if my new mattress had anything to do with it.

gamorazen · 27/07/2019 10:58

My hip pain went away after I got a memory foam pad for the bed, and started using magnesium oil spray. I also started adding gelatin to my drinks.

Leleophants · 29/07/2019 07:51

Thanks. Mine only started around 25 weeks I'm guessing the weight gain putting pressure on the side I lie on? I'm pretty active and do at least 10k steps a day. Wah :(

I'll ask OH to massage it maybe, thanks
