Sex = the last two chromosomes, I.e. Xx or XY

Gender = your fashion sense

According to Stonewall there are about 19 different genders now. A student in Scotland has recently been permanently excluded from school and not allowed to complete his A levels, just because he stated in class that there are only 2 genders.
When referring to a fetus or embryo, sex is the appropriate word, IMO. As the discussion is presumably around biology rather than " feelings".

  • I always thought the gender was determined by the mans sperm.

It is.*

Sex, yes. Gender, no. Two different things.

oyoyoy · 25/07/2019 00:13

*... sex defines the physical sexual category (for want of a better word) of an individual; gender is an umbrella term that covers the social expression, identity and stereotypical social and cultural differences & behaviours most commonly associated with those sexes.

Quite a lot of people get quite het up about it.
We can say the word 'sex' - it's not rude.*

This x100000000000.

I don’t really think there’s been that much research into it? I know google pulls up a bit of research from ten years ago but that’s it.
Obviously it’s the sperm that determines the sex but there are some theories that suggest the woman also plays a role such as vaginal ‘conditions’ allowing boy or girl sperm to thrice more.

That Henry VIII really shouldn’t have chopped Anne Boleyn’s head off......

I have seen some suggestions that she might have been Rhesus negative and he positive, which is why after Elizabeth none of her babies survived.

I had though that if a man fathered one sex it was slightly more likely he’d father the same sex again, so not quite 50/50. I also am sure I read if the father works in a hot environment like a kitchen he’d be more likely to father girls as it raises body temp, not sure if that’s true but if so it didn’t work for us as we just have boys!

Tavannach · 25/07/2019 00:29

I've got two boys and am pregnant again. I've wondered if my two boys make it more or less likely that I'll have another?

The woman's egg has an X chromosome, the man's sperm carries either an X or Y chromosome. If the sperm that fertilises the egg is X it's a girl, Y it's a boy. Almost 50/50 chance of either.
The next pregnancy the odds are the same - 50/50 chance either way. It resets each time. Like tossing a coin. Just because you 2 heads in a row it doesn't mean you're more or less likely to get heads the next time.

Ah statistics

MarieFromStTropez · 25/07/2019 00:37

I find this subject fascinating. We lived in a country where there were a high number of older white men married to younger Asian women. Quite a few were either colleagues of myself or DH, families that lived in our apartment block that we had become friends with, or friends of our DC.

Every single one of these couples without exception had daughters. So, around 45 daughters in total, no sons at all.

Booboo66 · 25/07/2019 00:50

My ex dp has a child before mine, she's a girl. We have 2 girls together and he has 2 girls since. His sister has 4 boys with her dh and has lost a baby at a late stage who was also a boy. I guess maybe it's a thing that a man is more likely to produce one or the other based on this. Obviously this is anecdotal, but I've known many others in similar circumstances. Of course could also be completely coincidental

pantherpants · 25/07/2019 07:26

This BBC article says 105 boys for every 100 girls are born. So not 50/50. I had thought it was 51% boy /49% girl, but it's not quite.

This is my local hospital, says the monthly spilt of boy girls on the poster each month for the last few months.

105 boys to 100 girls is 51% boys to 49% girls.

pantherpants · 25/07/2019 08:00

@MollyHuaCha maths not my strong point it seems, but it's interesting Blush Grin How do you calculate that ? ( tumbleweed rolls past only braincell)

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 25/07/2019 08:06

105+100=205
105/205=0.512, so just over 51%.

MollyHuaCha · 25/07/2019 08:15

Gasp got there first!

105 boys plus 100 girls is 205 babies.

Using a calculator (most phones have one) key in 105 (the number of boys) divided by 205.

The answer is 0.512. You can round this down to 0.51 because the 2 is closer to 0 than to it is to 10.

Next do the girls. 100 divided by 205 = 0.487. Round up to 0.49 because the 7 is closer to 10 than to it is to 0.

Check you have done it right by seeing that both sides add up to 1.

0.51 + 0.49 = 1

Change them both to percentages by multiplying x 100.

0.51 x 100 = 51
0.49 x 100 = 49

I don't know how legitimate this research is but:

www.sciencemag.org/news/2014/12/why-women-s-bodies-abort-males-during-tough-times

Also the ratio of male / female born can of course be altered by human means:

www.independent.co.uk/news/world/asia/no-girls-born-india-villages-female-foeticide-sex-selective-abortions-a9015541.html

As for gender Vs sex, there is a useful, fairly comprehensive list of genders here:

genderfluidsupport.tumblr.com/gender

Sex is of course male or female.
