Top Tips for when your first baby is on the way

When we were expecting our first, a few years ago, we did that rarest of things, and wrote down useful tips we were given. If they turned out to be no use after the event, we crossed them off, but we were left with a nice list of Top Tips for when your first baby is on the way which you might find useful or enjoy. Please don't take it as prescriptive in any way - it's just what worked for us - but we know a lot of people have found odd items on the list useful and informative over the years. Our little one is now quite a big one! But do think about making a list like this yourself if you can, because so many people will look to you after you've had your first and ask for advice - and the only thing we can say for sure is that you'll have forgotten the really useful stuff. Our very best wishes to anyone expecting their first.

All useful stuff, QQ iCod?

hippopowell · 31/07/2007 11:53

Why is it the sane thing to do to use disposable nappies??!!?? Cloth nappies are not hard to use are more reliable & a lot lot cheaper, better for babies skin. I could go on..

Peachy · 31/07/2007 12:00

MN ask people to pay a small fee to advertise, what's wrong with that? With Cod- not on. do it properly.

And also agree with washables. Disposables are used with ds3 now as he is so big, bloody annoying things

NotADragonOfSoup · 31/07/2007 12:27

And your comments about breastfeeding are ill informed.

mum2george · 31/07/2007 12:29

Cherry, I always found the best advice was to ignore all the tips everyone gave us, so thanks, but no thanks!

LucyJones · 31/07/2007 12:30

sorry I think your site is a bit naff
pmsl at the diary bit "Even now, Dawn reckons we put Alex in his own room in week 6, and I reckon week 2. And that's one heck of a difference. "
Who the feck cares? Why would you want to remember that?

Peachy · 31/07/2007 12:33

'Actually, we'd now recommend one bottle a day to even the most ardent breast-feeders. It could be expressed milk '

bt I wouldn't and I did the Unicef BFI BF course.

whose advice is the more appropriate do you think?

mum2george · 31/07/2007 12:35

Have just read the comments about BFing, they are not just ill-informed they are completely unhelpful and misleading. And I found the breast pump recommended to be completely useless and caused me alot of stress trying to use it.

I would advise anyone on MN to TOTALLY DISREGARD THIS WEBSITE and the "advice" given on it!

If you do need bfing information and support, please, please speak to someone who is properly trained to give it:

National Childbirth Trust: 0870 444 8708 (8am-10pm)
La Leche League: 020 7242 1278 (24 hours)
Breastfeeding Network: 0870 900 8787 (9.30am-9.30pm)
Association of Breastfeeding Mothers: 0870 401 7711

I hope you are well-meaning and just trying to be helpful, but I have to say I think you are touting your website, which is not on really.
And ill-informed advice as well I'm afraid.

Baffy · 31/07/2007 12:41

Why does a bf baby have to have a bottle at some point? I thought many mums who exclusively bf then go straight onto giving their lo a cup?

I found a lot of the comments to be a little bit misleading.

Lovely idea to give tips and ideas. But perhaps there should be a bit more emphasis on the site that this is your opinion and very much what worked for you.

mummyhill · 31/07/2007 12:42

What a load of Codswallop luckily the advice that gets metted out on here is much more sensible and bassed on a wider range of experiences. If you want more customers pay for an add like everyone else.

Kathyis6incheshigh · 31/07/2007 12:46

I don't think the OP is trying to get free advertising - it didn't look like a very commercial site and the tips page didn't have links to the rest of the site anyway.

So thanks for the tips, Cherry, but to be honest if you want to be helpful there is not much point in putting a link to this site from MN when you can get 1000 times more of the same straight off MN itself, and from a greater range of people and people with more knowledge about each area, as well.

gogetter · 31/07/2007 12:49

I think its a blog isn't it?

flowerybeanbag · 31/07/2007 12:52

there is advertising on the site, advertising revenue presumably depends on number of 'hits'..?

mum2george · 31/07/2007 12:54

Have just read the tips on bottle feeding and they are outdated Cherry.

You shouldn't be making up bottles in advance and then warming them up later. The advice is now to make up each bottle as it is needed to reduce the risk of infection to the baby.

You do seem well meaning, but very ill-informed. Again I would advise everyone to totally ignore your advice.

evenhope · 31/07/2007 12:56

"having the baby sleep one inch from your head at night is trendy, and you're made to feel like bad parents if you don't do it. Well, we didn't care. We got Alex out into his own room (in a pram carrycot) in the first few weeks, as soon as we could manage to actually sleep without lying there straining to hear him breathing."

This also flies in the face of the experts like FSIDS and is IMO quite dangerous.

As for the bottle comment- I'm speechless!

ggglimpopo · 31/07/2007 12:58

Sleep/sterilising/breastfeeding advice is ill informed and needs changing.
