Hi,

I’m going on holiday in just over a week.
On the last night I might have a glass of wine with my meal ? If there’s one thing I’m craving it’s wine! It’s literally Like I’m thirsty for it. I haven't touched a drop since finding out I’m pregnant just wanted to see if anyone had treated themselves to one glass. I’ll be 21 weeks when it touches my lips.
Thanks x

I have on several occasions - I've read around the subject and there is no evidence that the occasional glass of wine does any harm. I had a glass of champagne yesterday for my parents' anniversary and it was bloody delicious.

It's up to you. I find it a bit sad that we can't last 40 weeks without alcohol when research now proves there isn't anything good in it at all! But each to their own...

Just make sure you stop before you feel even slightly tipsy because that will be overwhelming the baby.

Fine I had one or two a couple of times a week.

I had a spritzer in early stages and have had a few sips of Guinness too (good for iron lol)

As for anyone saying a shame we can't last 40 weeks etc. Nothing good in alcohol but I bet that same perspective isn't used when you fancy a chocolate biscuit lol.

I would be perfectly comfortable having the odd glass, and have done so on a couple of occassions during my pregnancies. Have a look at professor emily osters research on this topic, her book is called expecting better. It will reassure you!

@Greyduck89 go for it! I'm 10+5 and haven't had anything yet, but you better bet I'll be having a champagne at my SILs wedding and a small glass of red with Christmas dinner!

@Leleophants that's a pretty judgmental thing to say. Have you read Expecting Better? Great look into the real science behind pregnancy recommendations - I'd thoroughly recommend reading it.

@MrsWalkz exactly - such a good point! The standards pregnant women are held to in this culture are unreal.

Have you read this report? It's pretty comprehensive, although a few years out of date now. It summarises scientific evidence about the effects of alcohol in pregnancy on 10 measures such as preterm birth, neurodevelopmental outcomes etc.

I read this and concluded that, after 12 weeks, an occasional small beer or glass of wine would be absolutely fine. And by occasional, I meant - a few times a month.

For me, it wasn't about not being able to give up alcohol for 40 weeks. It was all about feeling like I was taking a rational approach to pregnancy/baby stuff - not letting myself get whipped into a frenzy of anxiety about not being able to do this, that, and the other. Not everyone feels the same, and that is ok Smile

Do you really need to?

PurpleDaisies · 23/07/2019 12:50

There’s no evidence that a single glass of wine will have any negative effect at all.

Go for it.
