Hi all, I fly to Spain on Tuesday for a week away with my family - 10 of us in total! We've booked a large villa so self catering however we have our evening meal out every evening. I'm pretty happy knowing what's safe and what's not, and I'm not too worried, however I am wondering what people's opinions are on salad in restaurants? If something were to be served with a side salad, would you trust it had been washed or would you just avoid?

I personally would avoid. Some places are really great with washing, others not. I wouldn’t take the risk. I hope you have a lovely holiday! Smile

Spain should be fine for salad. It's not a third world country these days.

I ate it in Lanzarote wouldn't even cross my mind not to.

I'd avoid. Salad is a major cause of food poisoning.

Thanks everyone! I'll probably avoid just to err on the side of caution!

I’d avoid just to be safe, I’m in Sri Lanka at the moment and have avoided any raw fruit or veg which I can’t peel myself. I wouldn’t usually be that cautious but it’s not worth the risk. Also maybe avoid ice cubes in drinks..maybe the local water is ok in Spain though I’m not sure.

I’d avoid. They’ve probably washed it but the only time I’ve ever had food poisoning has been from salad.

Pregnant women in Spain are actually advised to avoid salad in restaurants and to wash it at home with a drop of bleach in the water (really!). So you might want to keep that in mind.

Sri Lanka is a 3rd world country. Spain is not. You only need to avoid the same foods that you would avoid in England.
