Mozzarella cheese safe? Worrying!!

Beth2016xxx · 20/07/2019 22:38

So I’ve just came out of a family meal at a Mexican restaurant! I had the vegetarian chilli and on top was sprinkled on some cheese it looked like orange cheddar and then white cheddar as I was eating I realised the lighter coloured cheese was actually mozzarella it wasn’t fresh it was dry and grated so seems like the one you buy at the supermarket that’s in the packet and grated ready to use so I’m assuming it should be pasteurised but now I’m not going to lie I’m panicking I feel so guilty for eating it and I naturally worry so much! Should this be okay!? I attached a photo of the cheese! It was dry and grated not soft moz so assuming it should be ok?,?

whole point of this website it’s for reassurance

Grin have you tried AIBU?

Seriously, celebelly wasn't rude, s/he was looking out for you. You got cross with them because they didn't provide you with the reassurance you're craving. They did give you some good advice though.

Have you read Expecting Better? You might find it interesting. It looks at the research evidence behind all the advice that pregnant women are given.

thepartysover · 21/07/2019 06:56

I can't see anyone being rude here. But your posts / your responses to anyone without the same anxieties as you is worrying. For your own sake, do try and find a way to rationalise before the baby is born. You will drive yourself mad Thanks

stucknoue · 21/07/2019 07:21

As a general rule, if it's cooked fresh it's safe, if it's commercially produced (thus pasteurised) it's safe, fresh out of a sealed package most things are safe. Avoid cut fruit unless it's prepared fresh in hygienic conditions especially in warm climates (whole fruits are fine).

Avoid foods containing liver, cooked foods that you eat cold from the fridge more than a day later (eg ham is ok out of a sealed packet but not 4 days later), uncooked seafood, unpasteurised soft cheese (hard cheese like Parmesan is fine).

But most foods are safe. I would suggest avoiding salad bars, hot buffet restaurants, and be sensible if confronted with a cold buffet (go for cheese & pickle rather than prawn). Even sushi is ok, just avoid raw fish types. If you do reheat food make sure it's piping hot and it's no more than 24 hours old.

Hope this helps. In my life I've only had food poisoning twice, once from an Indian buffet in the USA, once from watermelon on a Greek beach - food standards are good in the U.K.

I'm sure you will have more worries, people can allay your fears, hopefully your midwife can help you relax about things too. My midwife was great, she had practiced in various countries as a volunteer for msf so told me all kinds of hacks that work, all the things that don't matter etc. helped me put things into perspective, she left to work with Bedouin women just a few weeks after my dd was born

It’s normal to feel a bit anxious, especially in your first pregnancy but if you worry about every food you eat I’d def try get some support from your doctor. The NHS provide a provide a really comprehensive list of foods to avoid, so you can just check on there.. it’ll be a better source of reliability than a loads of non medically trained mums online!

But really do speak to your doctor & try get some coping techniques in place. When you have your baby, you’ll be bombarded with a million new worries and it’s ten times worse as it’s about keeping a tiny human alive, not hungry & happy! I’m not one to feel so anxious really but having a baby was an eye opener!

Morgan12 · 21/07/2019 09:17

I didn't even know this was a thing tbh. It will be fine.

ChrisPrattsFace · 21/07/2019 09:39

I have ate my weight in cheese since I got pregnant.
Also not much you can do after the fact - check menus before eating out if you’re unsure and find something. It might help you avoid any unnecessary anxieties after a nice evening out!

ffiffi8 · 21/07/2019 09:40

If you have anxieties oover foods during pregnancy, why do you eat it then ask if it's ok?

I ate everything and anything during pregnancy, apart from pate! It was the first thing I ate when I got home with her though! Grin

ffiffi8 · 21/07/2019 09:42

Oh and she's a completely healthy 5 week old baby girl 😊

NEtoN10 · 21/07/2019 09:47

I think if you are very anxious and worrying about food you're best just cooking for yourself. Doesn't seem like there is any pleasure eating out it it causes this much stress.

Personally I think the coke is more damaging than the cheese would be... But hey I ate some brie and a glass of champagne when I was in Paris so maybe you might think I was too relaxed.

JustTheCrowsAndTheBeef · 21/07/2019 10:09

Personally I think the coke is more damaging than the cheese would be

How so, please?

Teddybear45 · 21/07/2019 10:22

My rule of thumb is not to eat soft cheeses at restaurants in the UK or Italy because quite a lot don’t know if they use unpasteurised or pasteurised cheeses (if imported directly from a farm in Italy or Greece / Egypt etc, for example, the cheeses will probably be both unpasteurised and contain rennet which I don’t eat).

RiftGibbon · 21/07/2019 10:29

Fwiw I ate unpasteurised cheese when pregnant -just once and just a small amount. It was fine.
I also had wine spritzers on two or three occasions and drank tea with caffeine.
OP I think you should be asking for more help & support with managing your anxiety.

SoyDora · 21/07/2019 10:35

Is one of the cans of coke in the photo yours? Caffeine definitely isn't advised

Please check your facts before posting things like this on the post of someone who is already anxious.

ELM8 · 21/07/2019 11:12

Up to 200mg of caffeine is fine? I've been having quite a lot of Diet Coke..

Teddybear45 · 21/07/2019 11:18

Coca cola’s original can contains less caffeine than a bar of chocolate (and far less than a cup of tea or coffee). But it’s not really the caffeine that’s damaging it’s the aspartamine - so probably not a good idea to have one everyday.

VapeVamp12 · 21/07/2019 11:22

There isn’t aspartame in normal Coke only Diet Coke

Anothertempusername · 21/07/2019 11:58

No one is being rude; saying you are overly anxious is a fact and that's all there is too it.

PixieLumos · 21/07/2019 12:09

All these ‘rules’ are for the most part set out to help you avoid food poisoning (which is why it’s ok to eat the cheeses cooked) not because eating certain cheeses are in themselves dangerous to you or your baby. You wouldn’t under usual circumstances worry about potential food poisoning from a bit of cheese, so don’t worry now. It’s just about minimising risk.

SoyDora · 21/07/2019 12:45

The NHS does not advise to avoid aspartame. Honestly some of the responses on here are the reason the OP is confused and anxious.
OP, follow the NHS guidelines and you’ll be fine.

Emr82 · 21/07/2019 13:45

@Celebelly wasn’t being rude at all, but you @Beth2016xxx appear very rude.

pinkyredrose · 21/07/2019 13:50

Your anxiety will probably negatively affect your baby more than anything you eat.

PinkSpring · 21/07/2019 13:51

I am pregnant with my second and I ate a ball of mozzarella last night Grin- midwife said as long as it's pasteurised it's fine!

I am also drinking coffee/normal coke this time around but having one cup or one glass a day.

You do sound a bit obsessed with what you can/can't eat and I agree that it is you that are being rude. Rather than starting multiple posts, just look on the NHS website or ask your midwife

BiscuitDrama · 21/07/2019 13:54

Although you say the whole point of this website it’s for reassurance
it does get a bit tedious when people post things that are easily googleable. If everyone did this there wouldn’t really be a forum any more.

NEtoN10 · 21/07/2019 15:26

*Personally I think the coke is more damaging than the cheese would be

How so, please?*

Because coke isn't very good for you pregnant or not. In the same way chips, sweets, crisps or any junk food isn't. In my opinion a small amount of grated cheese is less unhealthy than a can of coke. I'm not saying coke is dangerous... It's just got no nutritional value

The cans in the picture are Coke Zero.
