Hi all,

I just wondered if anyone has been told especially with their second pregnancy if their baby’s head isn’t engaged yet. The little man is down, but his head is over the right of my stomach a bit, so I suppose transverse a little. After my appointment with the midwife yesterday I just feel a bit Confused. I thought he was engaged with the pain that I have been having. I know he has a lot more room in their due it being my second pregnancy so he can do as he pleases. I think it’s just playing on my mind that if my waters were to break and he’s still over to the right then the whole cord prolapse thing freaks me out. My waters broke with my daughter she was engaged, so no bothered there. Anyone have any tips to get him to go straighter lol or is it going to be a Mother Nature thing where he will decide to turn on his own when I go into labour?

Thanks

DD is my only but she was born 10days over and was never engaged. She was head down from about 37/38 weeks but never 'dropped' either.

My ds was still turning somersaults at 36 weeks. It made it very difficult to sleep Smile

I went into labour at 40+4 so not too bad.

A midwife actually mentioned to me the other day that for second/onwards pregnancies, babies heads don't engage until just before labour starts.

Kungfupanda67 · 20/07/2019 06:35

After your first they don’t tend to engage until they’re ready to come out, because everything is a bit more stretched than it was they can engage and come out again. My second didn’t engage until I was half way through labour (i thought it was a very long painful contraction!)

My second baby didn’t engage until the actual birth. The birth was easy with no problems.

Agree with other posters - this sounds normal OP. Good luck!

Hey, I’m 38 weeks and saw my midwife the other day- she mentioned that your first baby the head engages and stays there. But with your second or more because you have a bit more room the head tends to engage and come back out. Hence why you probably feel pressure down there. She also said they will engage once in labour and not to worry. Hope that helps :-)

DD didn’t engage until 39 weeks and was born 40+11 (a diva from the start!).

Thanks all. It sounds normal. To be honest she did say that she wasn't worried, I think the cord thing freaked me out. I do have a scan on the 30th July, my last growth scan so hopefully he is going to be in a good position then? Grin

I’m currently 39 weeks with #2 and was convinced baby was engaged because of the intense pressure I’ve been feeling this week. But according to midwife - no. My first never engaged until labour.

@TerriB1984 how odd. My first was engaged from 36 weeks or 34 one or the other. But this one is floating about lol! But I have heard seconds do, due to the room and the uterus being stretched.

My first baby wasn't engaged at 37+6, he was born the following day! My second was engaged from about 36 weeks and wasn't born until 39. I don't think it really has much correlation with labour.

B0bb · 20/07/2019 17:56

@mistermagpie how strange.. I suppose it's just down to them when they have had enough and want to enter the world lol
