Hi all,
Just for fun!
What ethnicity’s will your Baby’s be?
I have a proper little mixture growing inside me 😂. She will be half English, quarter Pakistani, an eighth Irish and and eighth Jamaica. I’m really hoping for her to have Curley hair but I think the black is too diluted so she’ll just end up a frizzy mess!

Thanks x

Irish, English, Welsh and Romanian. With traveller and gypsy heritage from the Irish and Romanian lines. And my DSD is English/Filipina

Mine are grown up now. White English.

Daughter grown up now, lovely mix of Jamaican, Irish and English

I've never understood how people feel to be from a single ethnicity is boring or uninteresting. I love that I'm 90+ % (DNA Test) English (No Celtic picked up, and 8% Scandinavian, which is standard for people from certain parts of England it seems), it gives me a sense of a greater overall affinity to the land and culture that I and my ancestors are a part of. It's just as interesting to be tied to a single place and culture, as it is to be from several, or at least I think so.

As for my child, shes going to be half English and half Hungarian, although with my partners family history, she will be more ethnically Germanic and Slovak, but culturally Hungarian.

We're looking forwards to teaching her the history and culture of both sides. We may live in the UK, but I don't want her to lose her connection to the Hungarian side of her. Smile

xsamix86 I'm the same as you! DH is Chinese and I'm white British. The baby will have dual citizenship with both our home countries. We're so excited to see what she looks like! I was born totally bald and stayed that way for ages whereas he had a full head of thick hair! Also interested to see if she burns (like me) or tans (like him). We're pretty sure her hair and eyes will be brown like the other mixed kids in the family. DH does have some bright red hairs mixed amongst his black hair though so let's see!

Ahh can't wait to see her little face!

I love that she'll have two cultural histories behind her (her Chinese family tree is recorded back 15 generations!) but I'm sure she'll probably experience some difficulties that I haven't faced because of her mixed race. Hopefully the world is kind to her!

Neome · 19/07/2019 03:17

I'm English but mixed race and learned, as I grew up, to think of myself as British and then as European 🙁. If very lovely English people on this thread are honestly and automatically thinking of English as meaning white English how should I describe myself?

My mixed race children are very different looking. I imagine one will be more likely to be told to 'go back' than the other.

It's lovely to hear of all the rich heritage love creates.

SlowMoFuckingToes · 19/07/2019 03:22

English, Irish, Scottish, French, Italian, Portuguese! The kids all look very different. Some got the olive complexion some are very fair.

xsamix86 · 19/07/2019 07:27

@Kinsters that's one thing I am worried about, and it's the same worry my OHs family all have. My SS is a beautiful little 6 year old and I hope my girl takes after him. He looks like his daddy, has his mums shyness but think he also has some of my weirdness 😂 I've helped raise him for over 5 years so I do see some of me in him! But when hes with me or his mum I dont think u automatically think he is half chinese, its definitely obvious with his dad.

shumway · 19/07/2019 08:43

My point was the same as Neome. I am English but not white and other people are saying oh my baby looks English ie white.

ChristinaMarlowe · 19/07/2019 08:46

White English and Black Portuguese, born yesterday! 🥰

What ethnicity will your baby be?
shumway · 19/07/2019 09:07

Gorgeous baby! Congratulations.

JingsMahBucket · 19/07/2019 09:11

@Pinkflower23 English does not equal white. And that is sure as heck is doubly true for anyone claiming that South African equals white! What are you people smoking?

cloudyinjune · 19/07/2019 09:18

And I’m guessing regardless of the ethnicity mixtures on here 99% of their nationality’s will be British. Unless there’s the odd American on here.
This site is not for British or Americans
I am neither of those Blush

troppibambini · 19/07/2019 09:21

My children are Irish italian. Two red heads and two dark with olive skin. Genes fascinate me.

Charley50 · 19/07/2019 10:05

I always thought the definition of 'English' as being from England from way back; e.g. ethnic English descended from Britons, Norman or Vikings (maybe Romans?) a very long time ago, and the definition of 'British' as having heritage from absolutely anywhere in the world but born / grown up in Britain. So most Greek or Caribbean heritage people in London think of themselves as Londoners, Greek/ Jamaican (heritage), and British for example, rather than English.

But I can see how that doesn't work as a definition any more.

Charley50 · 19/07/2019 10:21

But I imagine in Wales, Scotland and Ireland, whatever heritage you have you would generally call yourself Welsh, Irish or Scottish etc. If that's where you were born/ brought up?

ChristinaMarlowe · 19/07/2019 17:14

@shumway Thank you 😊

I'm 4% Neanderthal
That's more Neanderthal than 97pct of people

My children are all white British though. Which is less exciting

Neome · 20/07/2019 09:09

There's another way to read the form MissPolly but your way really scares me. I can totally see why you are saying it means you have to be White to be English.

I don't think that was the intention when it was written.

Cosmogirl86 · 20/07/2019 09:20

This thread got a bit racist!! Since when are non white people unable to describe themselves as English! Nonsense.

My babies will be 100% Irish, both me and my husband were born and bred here! So I'm also neither English, American or British. So am I no longer welcome on mumsnet?

I am so pleased to see all the beautiful combinations that people falling in love can create. Good luck to everyone with your beautiful babies!

MissPollyHadADolly19 · 20/07/2019 10:22

How the hell is it racist @cosmogirl86 Hmm if you were to be filling out an official form the "correct" term would be "ethnic origin" then British. Not English Black or English Pakistani etc.
My DH, his family (and many other BME) would never use English to describe their ethnicity, despite being born here as it's an insult to his actual heritage.

@neome I've never seen any other way Confused
No offence intended, it genuinely comes across as PPs confusing nationality with ethnicity.

Fwiw, I don't know any BME to refer themselves as English, only British. Strange when you think you've got the option to be African American for example but not African English.
