MCDA (identical) or fused placenta

Hi, looking for advice and shared experience please.

At my 12 week scan (done at 11+5) I was given the news that I was expecting identical/mcda twins. This was confirmed by a second sonographer as the first brought in a colleague to double check. There was a very thin membrane separating the babies, two sacs. One placenta.

Since being told I'm expecting twins I've been put on fortnightly scans to check for even growth/ttts.

At 16 weeks they said one of the babies was a boy. Very obvious on the screen. The other baby wasn't so obliging so it was assumed a boy due to the identical twin scenario.

Today I've been for another growth scan. All is well. T1 definitely a boy again. Looked at T2 and it appeared to be a girl! How could this be? Baby had thighs very close together and was sleeping so not very obliging at all.

Sonographer said they'll need to check again. Could potentially be a fused placenta on non identical twins?

I'm really confused and worried. Does anyone have experience of this?

No experience of this at all - but perhaps you could try on the multiples board? It’s not as popular as the pregnancy one but is frequented by some very knowledgeable people.

Also, try calling TAMBA (twins and Multiple Births Association) , I found them really helpful in the early mind boggling days of trying to get my head around twins when I wasn’t expecting to be pregnant.

I know twins who were delivered early due to suspected twin to twin transfusion- it was clear early on that one has brown hair and brown eyes and the other is blonde with blue eyes- not identical at all, just implanted very close together so appeared to be identical. They do get it wrong sometimes, it’s all very tiny at the 12 week stage. Mine had separate sacs and placentas which fused before they were born. Both boys and similar looking so I paid for the dna test and they are identical, they’d just split before they’d implanted.
