Tips for nausea

Hi all,

Nearly 7 weeks pregnant and nausea has hit me hard. From the moment I wake up until I go to bed. Always feel like I'm on the verge of a migraine - a bit like I'm hungover!

I haven't been sick yet, just dry heaving. I have quite a strong stomach though so I'm not the throwing up type! The nausea is horrid though.

I'm starting to really struggle at work, even though I've been trying all the usual tips you see online (eating little and often, ginger, mints, travel sickness bands) all to no avail!

I have a long car journey with work colleagues next week (4 hours there and back) and I honestly don't know how I'm going to do it. Any tips?!

I feel awful for complaining because I'm obviously so happy to just be pregnant! Just really need something to help me get through the working day!

Urgh, I feel your pain. Different things work for different people of course, but I found this helpful:
Ginger biscuits, Constantly having boiled sweets in my pocket to eat, and Constantly sipping water

Only thing that’s helped me a little (not great I know) is sucking a sweet when feeling about to be sick/dry heave, sometimes it stops it.
Also sips of quite flat coke.
Also little snacks of protein like peanut butter sandwich, hard boiled egg, mozzarella cheese sometimes helps a bit.
Nausea is horrible Flowers

@usersouthcoast @sarahg216 Thanks for your tips ladies!

My food aversions are at a high at the minute and I'm even struggling to want to water 🙈

Spoke to my GP and she said it's probably best I take some time off work but I know my bosses wouldn't be happy about that right now... she's also prescribed me some anti sickness which she said they can't guarantee are 100% safe so now I'm unsure I want to risk it :/

I'm thinking I may just have to put up with it and hope I get some relief soon.

They can't guarantee safety as it is unethical to test on pregnant women. As someone with hyperemesis, I am telling you you take the meds. The sooner you nip it in the bud, the better.

GoldPaperStars · 17/07/2019 09:55

I second Ribenaberriesgowoo82. Take the medication. Constant nausea this early is how my Hyperemesis started and at nearly 17 weeks I’m only feeling vaguely human. The earlier you start the medication the better it works.

I completely understand your reluctance to take anything, but I ended up in hospital because I was able to eat and drink so little (mostly from the nausea, not the actual vomiting as there wasn’t a huge amount of that). Google “pregnancy sickness support” for info and call them if you need. They’re amazing. Good luck!

Take the medication, it really helps! I bought some vomit bags for my commute, only used once but were reassuring to have. I found boiled sweets helped, anything that I didn’t mind the taste of.

Are you going to tell work/colleagues? I told some and it really helped as I was able to work from home and have some understanding when it was bad at work - might be a good idea for your car journey! Hope it passes soon for you op!

Take the medication, it helped me a bit mainly stopped puking but didn’t touch my nausea. I found peppermint smints and sniffing peppermint oil helped (a bit). Fizzy water with squash helped me get liquids down (i tried fizzy water with lemon but it was a bit meh). Its horrible, you have all my sympathy.

Ribenaberriesgowoo82 · 17/07/2019 10:10

Yes! Pregnancy Sickness Support people were amazing to me this week.

bellinisurge · 17/07/2019 10:12

Try to keep hydrated. I was hospitalised with hyperemesis because I couldn't even keep water down.
I tried to eat watery foods that were tolerable like cucumber and lettuce.

I suffer with this bad !! Frim 5 weeks pregnant I am now 19 weeks and I'm still feeling in sick also headaches it's got a lot better but it wont vanish I've tried so many tablets from my GP nothing worked half of them just put me to sleep just try eat because not eating will make your sickness worse!!

AuroraMJ · 17/07/2019 10:48

Thank you all ❤️ Sorry so many of you have suffered so badly. I will collect the tablets later and give them a go as I don't want to make myself worse.

Did you have trouble with work? I wasn't planning on telling them until at least 12 weeks but I feel like I might have to so I can try and work from home a few days a week just to help me out a little.

I told work early, prompted by an idiot who, contrary to office policy, came in with a contagious disease (there's a list of what constitutes a risk to pregnancy disease at work) and put every pregnant woman at risk.

Ribenaberriesgowoo82 · 17/07/2019 11:25

I've been off work since 7 weeks and I am now 11 and am off for further 2 weeks. Unfortunately, the meds weren't for me so I am on bed rest.

sarahg216 · 17/07/2019 15:13

Ah bless you Aurora.. yes if you’re struggling to keep water down I’d say get on the anti sickness tablets quick. You might need to try a couple before they start to work for you and as pp have said, the earlier the better.
The work trip sounds too much if you are this bad. I’d be inclined to tell work.
Hope it eases up soon.
Btw have you tried ice lollies, can be a bit easier than water xx

possum236 · 17/07/2019 17:22

I am currently 7 weeks also with my first child and suffering badly with sickness! Today has been the worst, cannot keep anything down!
