Sugar in urine - glucose test

Sparkle2019 · 15/07/2019 19:30

I went for my 10 week appointment with my midwife who tested my urine and it had a little sugar. However, she didn't document this. She then tested at 16 weeks and I still had sugar. Should she be referring me now or is it later on I have the glucose test? I'm nearly 17 weeks.

Thanks!

I had a glucose test at about 26 weeks. Not sure if that's the time to do it but I had mine booked in from January but wasn't until May was 12 weeks when the appointment came through. I'd thought they might have tested you if sugar is showing in your urine though.

I think sugar in urine isn't considered as an accurate diagnostic tool anymore. Pregnant women always have slightly higher sugar levels and those can fluctuate depending on hydration levels.

Though having said that, I had massive levels of glucose in my urine (500-1000) during routine controls, and they never flagged it or contacted me. I ended up with gestational diabetes and I only noticed by going back in detail through my notes that several urine tests were abnormal.

I've just been diagnosed with gestational diabetes after having glucose in my urine. The midwife told me here they refer you for testing if you have low levels of glucose twice, or high levels (think it was +++) once. I'd call and ask your midwife if you are worried.
