Birthing centers (IVF babies )

Hi All,
Does anyone have any information on using birthing centers if your having an IVF baby ? I have been told that this will not be an option for me as a IVF baby is high risk and I may have to be induced. 3 different midwifes have advised differently and I really want to use the facilities of the birthing pool which I have also been told I can not have.

I live in Wigan but I think I am going to change my maternity care to Preston as Wigan do not have any facilitates and my husband is not allowed to stay with me after birth at Wigan but you can at Preston which do think is ridiculous in this day in age.

Has any one got any experience at Wigan or Preston ?

Janad

Ivf in and of itself generally doesn't make you high risk... are there any other factors that do? Age? Health conditions, etc.

I am 38 and fit and well

In my Trust an IVF pregnancy was considered no more risky than other pregnancies and I used the birth centre. My friend in a neighbouring area had to be induced at 40 weeks with an ivf pregnancy due to their policy. I couldn't find an evidence base. Can you look at neighbouring trust policies?

It's the same in my area, with my first baby I didn't question it and just went along with what they said but I'm now pregnant with my 2nd ivf baby and I'm going to ask them whether I can choose the birth centre this time as long as I carry on with no other risk factors... not sure how it will go but I at least want to try to have it as an option!

What were the reasons for IVF? Were genetic / hormonal conditions found? Is your BMI over 30 now?

As pp said there is nothing inherently more risky about IVF pregnancy, I had the same treatment as any other woman with exactly the same options. I would have given birth at a birthing centre had labour not gone awry but again that was nothing to do with IVF. Push them to give you a more specific reason to be considered high risk so you can make an informed choice.

A friend of mine with an IVF baby had to be induced if she hadn’t gone into labour naturally by her due date, as that was the policy in the trust where we live. And because she was induced she couldn’t use the midwife led unit. Could be that they mean a similar thing?

Our trust was the same, but they did say if I continued to be "risk free" in general then they would allow it.... especially as I started talking about a home birth!
But in the end had to be induced due to waters breaking and no contractions and she was undiagnosed breach so it was for the best I was on the ward anyway!

It is rather frustrating as no one could tell me why IVF was considered a more risky birth!

I was ivf and therefore put into consultant led but they would have considered me on arrival for birth centre as pregnancy mostly straightforward. As it happened, I had meconium in my waters and no contractions on admittance so was straight up to ward. It was for the best in the end as I needed forceps and spinal and ended up having a large pph so being on labour ward and right next to theatre was the right place.
