Eating subway whilst pregnant

Dumb question but my friend suggested that you shouldnt eat subway whilst pregnant. I usually (pre-preg) demolish a spicy italian (salami and pepperoni) hot with cheese.
Is there a supposed list of things I cant eat from subway?

Gosh I didn't even know this was a thing.

Read "expecting better".

melissa1215 · 14/07/2019 21:55

I've been eating subways quite a lot, especially the salads... no problems yet at 28 weeks

Listeria can be symptom less. You are almost certainly fine, melissa, but continuing to take risks because nothing bad happened the last time you did it is not really advisable...

“Handsoffmysweets

Oh fgs 🙄 OP, eat what you want.”

Oh, so she should just go ahead and drink whatever she wants as well? Hmm

Hellosunshine30 · 14/07/2019 22:42

@00100001 I'm due in a couple of weeks and have managed to not have any. It will make it more enjoyable when I can. Will keep that in mind though. Thanks

chooseausername · 14/07/2019 22:54

I'm slightly freaking out. I've been so good and have been checking fhe NHS website when I haven't been sure. I had an Italian BMT for dinner on Thursday and had the rest for lunch on Friday. I didn't even think about the meat! I think I just considered it as cooked. I'm 28 weeks. Will I have done any damage?! I have a midwife appointment on Wednesday so I'll mention it then. I can't believe how stupid I've been!

HeadintheiClouds · 14/07/2019 22:56

If it was cooked you’ll be FINE

NotYourHolidayDick · 14/07/2019 22:58

Dear god 😂😂

It's fine. It's Subway, not roadkill. Jesus do you lot really think about these things?! If we were that delicate the world would have long died out by now 😂

chooseausername · 14/07/2019 22:59

I think it's the leaving it til the next day that's getting to me! It was toasted at the time...

stucknoue · 14/07/2019 23:17

It's fine, seriously don't stress yourselves over this. Avoid really high risk products but commercial sushi and deli meats are ok from reputable places (all fish for sushi must be frozen in the U.K.). Advice changes all the time, apparently you can even eat peanuts these days! I would be more cautious overseas, especially with buffets and certainly avoid oysters etc. Subway et al would not want to risk their reputation by having unsafe storage etc

ELM8 · 14/07/2019 23:23

I've had quite a few subway salads and have been fine.. I think I also had a subway sandwich in the "beige food only" stage of my first trimester. It didn't even cross my mind that this is a thing?

It has a 5 food hygiene rating which makes me think salad from here is no more dangerous than salad elsewhere outside the home... as per previous posts I think a bit of common sense is needed - there's no need to go taking huge risks but also need to be able to live a bit.

Kinsters · 15/07/2019 03:56

I eat subway all the time, at least once or twice a week. Everything is about relative risk - I don't drink alcohol because there's evidence it can harm the baby (plus DH is allergic and I don't know if that means the baby would not be able to process even small amounts just like my DH). I've avoided liver and anything with vitamin A added because of the birth defects link. I don't think there's enough evidence to avoid things like salads, deli meat, etc. though so I don't bother. I don't see how they're more harmful than the alternatives.

qj17 · 15/07/2019 08:38

I had subway all throughout my pregnancy my daughter is fine.

Rubberyduck · 15/07/2019 09:30

Yeah I was gobsmacked tbh that it was brought up as an issue. I've eaten plenty of pre packed sandwiches and deli baguettes etc. If there is a chance of toxo from just the shop using the same knife to cut a sandwich I think the line has to be drawn somewhere... i can certainly control certain elements of my diet but it sounds like there is alot of scaremongering.

Either way I will air on the side of caution and opt for a tuna subway if I go (albeit a small one as tuna is restricted Hmm) but perhaps not worry about them getting me a specific knife!

Could you look into getting a blood test and see if you're already immune to toxoplasmosis? Knowing I'm already immune has been helpful for me definitely (mostly with our cats but also with eating out and not stressing too much if I eat some rare meat etc).

I limit myself to one tuna sub a week because of the mercury thing but meatballs is totally satisfying my cravings for tomato stuff at the moment!

00100001 · 15/07/2019 10:15

@chooseausername "I'm 28 weeks. Will I have done any damage?!"

No, not a tall. They are foods to be avoided - one offs won't harm your LO. Just like the occasional glass of wine won't harm baby... Don't stress. Just read the NHS guidance and decide for yourself. :)

00100001 · 15/07/2019 10:17

"(albeit a small one as tuna is restricted Hmm)"
That's because of the high levels of vitamin A :)

00100001 · 15/07/2019 10:20

stucknoue "all fish for sushi must be frozen in the U.K." - that's not true.

If you go to fresh counters (like Sushi Daily) - they will have frozen the tuna, but not the salmon. You just have to ask to be sure which products have been previously frozen.

If it's supermarket prepackaged it will have been pre-frozen. Also, 'Yo Sushi' the chain restaurant freezes all fish.

But, best to just ask and be sure.

Morgan12 · 15/07/2019 10:20

My first pregnancy I was so so vigilant and didn't eat loads of stuff 'just incase'. Ended in MC. Next 2 pregnancies I ate whatever I wanted. All good.

Rubberyduck · 15/07/2019 10:21

Its a whole science it would seem!

Shame, as I bloody love tuna right now 😒

"Dear god 😂😂 It's fine. It's Subway, not roadkill. Jesus do you lot really think about these things?! If we were that delicate the world would have long died out by now 😂"

That's quite unkind, people naturally worry about things like this. I'm sure 70 years ago, few people would have batted an eyelid at smoking whilst pregnant.

And yes, some people forgot that foods like salami should be avoided rather than worrying about cross-contamination. But we only do what we think is best at the time.

People want to be re-assured, not mocked fro being concerned...

00100001 · 15/07/2019 10:25

rubberyduick - then have tuna :)

NHS says:
Don't eat more than:

  • 2 tuna steaks a week (each weighing about 140g when cooked or 170g when raw), or
  • 4 medium-sized cans of tuna a week (about 140g a can when drained)

(due to mercury as well as vit A)

So you can still have plenty :)

Heyha · 15/07/2019 10:37

This gets posted quite often and normally propel come on to post that the cured meat is frozen before use (so fine) and to read the NHS guidance already posted (and if you're not sure what a company does, you can ask them...) and Expecting Better.

You're at far more risk of getting something nasty from having tea at Auntie Sue's house than from a global chain which has hygiene protocols that pass regular rigorous inspections in order to keep the business going, but nobody ever seems to worry about whether Auntie Sue has washed her hands after fussing the cat before making your salad that's been in her may or may not be at temperature fridge 🙄

dementedpixie · 15/07/2019 10:40

Its not vitamin A that's an issue for Tuna, its mercury. I hardly think a tuna sub will exceed the 4 x 140g you are allowed of tinned tuna.
