After scan gonna send some pics to. Elderly relatives
We. Want to avoid just doing on the phone. As they love mail, pics, letters etc. They really Do treasure it.
I'd. Like to do a nice riddle or something. But can't think.

CmdrCressidaDuck · 14/07/2019 17:50

Er, why?!

Thats just silly. Do you want people to write to you in riddles? Just tell them "we have some wonderful news, we're expecting a baby, due (date)" and whatever truth about how excited you are. Writing in riddles is cutesy and weird.

RollOnSummerBreak · 14/07/2019 17:51

Didn't mean a riddle couldn't think of a word. Just a nice way.

It's a letter. Written communication should be clear and to the point. If they're elderly they're very unlikely to want letters that play silly games with them. Something honest in which you state your true feelings about being excited/really valuing them and not being able to wait until they meet the baby/their good thoughts mean so much to you will be a million times more treasured and meaningful than a cutesy idea from Instagram.

PurpleDaisies · 14/07/2019 17:55

What’s wrong with just writing “we are expecting a baby in (insert date) and are very excited” with the scan picture?

They’ll be excited by the news, not how it’s delivered.

TillyTheTiger · 14/07/2019 17:56

I made congratulations cards for mine with the scan picture in (ie. Congratulations, you're going to be a great-grandma). Went down well. No rhymes though.
Make sure whatever you send isn't too cryptic - we visited my husband's grandmother, told her we had a surprise and showed her the scan photo and she had absolutely no idea what she was looking at as apparently she'd never seen one and they didn't have scans in her day!

kittytiggy · 14/07/2019 18:01

I know what the OP means by 'riddle', it's special, def not 'weird' @CmdrCressidaDuck so kindly keep your judgement to yourself x

this is lovely. My friend put something like ov (bun) en.
I found this article too which is worth a read.
Good luck! Flowers

PurpleDaisies · 14/07/2019 18:05

Those are truly nauseating kate.

kittytiggy · 14/07/2019 18:10

@PurpleDaisies ok xxx

CmdrCressidaDuck · 14/07/2019 18:10

Does the pleasure or understanding of the elderly relatives in question feature at all, or are they purely props for the social media post about how smart and cute you are?

There's nothing at all special about someone else's formulaic riddle/poem. It's purely an attempt to show how "creative" you are and completely at odds with a sincere desire to share your joy with another human being you value.

HeadintheiClouds · 14/07/2019 18:11

A riddle? In the name of all that’s holy, just use your words. Seriously, nobody wants to be forced to do a bloody quiz to find out that someone else is pregnant 🤨

louise5754 · 14/07/2019 18:13

"I'm pregnant"

QueenoftheFarts · 14/07/2019 18:15

I love the idea of a poem. I haven't seen my son for a while and his girlfriend wrote a really sweet poem in a card they sent to me.

It is clear you are trying to think of something they will treasure in the way you set out the message and I think that is a great idea.

Perhaps rather than a card it is set out in a gift box?

I think you are being really thoughtful.

Not sure what social media has to do with it, if they are elderly they may not be on social media. My parents certainly aren't.

flowery · 14/07/2019 18:16

Overplanning and overthinking everything as people seem to do these days must be so exhausting.

RollOnSummerBreak · 14/07/2019 18:27

Thanks for the helpful replies.
I don't use social media so no idea what people do on there.
But will do a card with nice words and the pic. They will understand the pic because they've had them for everyone's children. And they're all in frames with their birth photos as well. Everything is sentimental To them

Just a nice letter will be ok. Dear xxx, wanted to share some exciting news with you, we're having a baby and the due date is in xxxx. We hope you and xxx are well. We will keep you up dated with how things are going love xxxx. You could but the scan in an enclosed envelope which on the front says open after reading the letter. Short and simple.no fuss needed

HeadintheiClouds · 14/07/2019 18:31

Are you sending a picture of the scan photo? Do you not think that would be instantly recognisable for what it is without including a pointless (and rather patronising) riddle as well??

starsinyourpies · 14/07/2019 18:31

We have some lovely news to share, we are expecting a baby in December! All is going well so far with the pregnancy.

In my experience older relatives are flummoxed by scan pictures as not used to them but your call on that.

purplecorkheart · 14/07/2019 18:47

Firstly, congratulations on your good news. I would keep it very simple and say something like Y and I are thrilled to share our wonderful news with you both/you. We are expecting a baby on x2020. We are both delighted.

I probably would not include the scan photo but that is based on the reaction to some of my family members who were not happy that a cousin of mine had a scan photo stuck on the fridge of a family owed family home. They felt it was too personal and that it have been limited to immediate family only. (They are a bit odd so your relative could react differently).

ChangesAt30 · 14/07/2019 19:09

Some right miserable gits on here isn't there Grin

@RollOnSummerBreak I love doing 'special' things like this!
Could you make a card on Moonpig with a bun in the oven pic on the front and do a little poem inside? I love writing poems 😂 have done similar to this for various birthday surprises etc.

MummyBear405 · 14/07/2019 19:35

@RollOnSummerBreak I think this is a lovely idea and I have no clue why you're getting so much negativity!!

You know your relatives and what they would appreciate for example my mum loves writing poems so when we told her I gave her a card and played it off as a thank you for helping us with some stuff around the house, inside I wrote this poem:

They don't know what I'll look like or what my name will be
They haven't had a scan yet, I am too small to see
But I promise Gran I'm coming and I'll give you cuddles plenty,
I can't wait to meet you on Jan 2020!

She loved it, was over the moon and will treasure that card for all time!

sweetsaltypopcorn · 14/07/2019 21:15

We sent SIL this card and stuck a copy of the scan pic inside:

RollOnSummerBreak · 14/07/2019 21:54

@MummyBear405 that's what I was trying to say / meant something like that. Thank for all input.
