Second baby after 5 week preemie experiences

Currently 14 weeks pregnant with my second. My first DD was 5 weeks premature, which I know isn't very early compared to some but she did have to spend 9 days in scbu after birth. My waters broke suddenly and I gave birth 48 hours later. So far my midwife has been a bit vague about whether I will have any extra monitoring in this pregnancy or what the chances are of it happening again. Just wondering if anyone has been in a similar position and if their second baby was also premature, and if you had any additional checks during pregnancy.

Are you consultant lead or midwife lead? That’s normally an indication.
Your notes should say which you are.
My friends first was a 28 weeker and was consultant lead for her 2nd and was signed off at 34 weeks as at 34 weeks they won’t stop them coming early.
that might indicate that unless any concerns that you won’t?
Did you first come at 35 weeks?

My first was a 35 weeker after a no risk, text book pregnancy. (Spontaneous labour, 48 hours in NICU)
My 2nd was considered high risk, issues with the placenta. They didn’t expect me to get past 32 weeks, but the placenta self corrected and I got to 38 weeks (by an hour! Almost delivered at 37+6)
Again spontaneous labour but SUPER fast labour.

My notes say Shared (Obstetrician + Midwife) care but so far I have only seen community midwife. Yes, first baby born at 35 weeks, she had suspected sepsis and was hypoglycemic so had to be tube fed for a couple of weeks (we were allowed home with the tube in after 9 days).

Following with interest as my first baby was also a 35 weeker and we are starting to consider trying for another. I am so worried about having another premature baby. Most of the time I think I can cope but then there are days like today when an old work colleague posted that she had her baby a couple of weeks ago at 32 weeks and all the worry comes back and knocks me for six! My waters also broke suddenly and baby was here five hours later (caesarean). Wishing you a happy and healthy pregnancy, and I hope you make it to term. Flowers

A positive story though my friend went to full term... midwife lead unit and water birth after her first was a 28 weeker so there is hope!

This is my 2nd and I’m consultant lead but for diff reasons - lletz between pregnancies and first was small. I’m now high risk of pre term labour, I first saw the consultant at 16 weeks though that was for my cervix.
The Midwfie did indicate this though and told me I’d have growth scans and when they would be etc.
Can you ask at your next appt?

DiploCat1 · 12/07/2019 22:24

@squirrelclub thank you! Very happy to share my experience with this one if you'd like. I occasionally worry too, more about coping if this one ends up needing a hospital stay and the impact it would have on my 2 year old.

@fridaycantaleepdoh1 thats great news! I would really like a water birth this time round if I'm allowed.

I will ask at my 16 week appt. It just seems ages away (I know it's not!)

My first was at 32 weeks, second at 28 and third even earlier! Yes, lots of extra monitoring especially if they arent sure why it happened. Make a bit of a fuss with your midwife to make sure you get extra checks, peace of mind is just as important. And try keep them out with their speculums!

inthebackground · 12/07/2019 22:30

I had a overdue baby after my first at 27 weeks.
I didn’t have extra monitoring, as they could find no reason for her premature birth (spontaneous)

Currently 15 +2 with second. 1st was born at 34 weeks after back labour starting at 33 weeks and waters breaking at 34. Im consultant lead this time and getting the high risk rating i fought for and didnt get with my boy. I have a uterine deformity which i think was the main cause of pre term labour but this one is on the opposite side. Im taking my due date with a pinch of salt and going to plan for things being early again. 1st spent almost 2 weeks in nicu and that was hard enough without trying to do it again with one at home so dreading that aspect

Loyaultemelie · 13/07/2019 10:18

Dd1 32weeker. Dts late miscarriage (lots of problems) dd2 due date full term

BottomleyPottsSpots2 · 13/07/2019 15:38

Baby 2 came precipitously at 35 weeks. Baby 3 was showing no signs of wanting to budge when they induced him at 36 weeks so in many cases history doesn't repeat itself. I have been told that a delivery after 34 weeks is not treated as a significant risk for future preterm delivery so no additional consultant care for this reason (I get consultant care for other reasons though!).

DiploCat1 · 28/07/2019 06:07

Just in case anyone was interested... saw a different midwife for my 16 week check as turns out my original one has retired. She has requested a cervical length measurement be taken at my 20 week scan and then to see a consultant to discuss at 24 weeks.
