Moving from England to Scotland to give birth

Hello all,

Im 12 weeks pregnant and living away from home but plan to return to Scotland when I'm around 8 months pregnant and give birth there (to be at home, have family around etc).

Has anyone been in this situation. The reason I ask is my ante natal care is in england and my midwife looked miffed when I mentioned informing midwife or obstetrician at home to keep them in the loop.

Surely it's not just a case of turning up on the doorstep of a midwife at home at 8 months.

If anyone has any experience of this it would be great to hear. Thanks.

You would take your hand held notes with you (or a print out) and go to Scotland. Bear in mind Scottish hospitals may still require you to book for the labour ward and so I suggest doing that asap.

But yeah the old midwife / doctor won’t have anything more to do with you. It would he up to your new mw / doctor to check in and Scottish maternity services are not consistent - some will while others won’t. If you have complications you’re probably better to give birth in England.

You should probably call the maternity services team and let them know, in more remote places they would need to fit you in, in the big cities it won't be as difficult

Thanks. I didn't think of the labour ward booking. Good point. I had been wondering about giving the midwife at home a call but wasn't sure if I would be acting out of turn. I might give them a call and see what they say.
