Sweep question..

I’m 40+2 and I tried to have a sweep today, the midwife said she could just get the tip of a finger into the cervix and touched the baby’s head, so wasn’t able to perform a sweep.

I didn’t think to ask at the time, but if she was able to do this does that mean I’ve lost my plug? As I’ve not noticed losing it.

Normally a sweep involves pushing your finger in a circular motion inside the cervix, separating the amniotic sac membranes from the cervix. This also releases prostogladins which can initiate the beginning of labour. If the midwife couldn't do the sweep, the baby's head must be pushing hard against the cervix - all ready to go. Yes your plug has probably gone, most likely in pieces which you wouldn't have noticed. Good luck !

So now - tmi warning - I have had what looks like could be the mucous after wiping on the loo. But I was wondering if it’s possible this is just some of the gel that was used for the exam?

@Bernifal while not particularly pleasant, there are lots of pictures online of mucous plugs if you want to chance googling just to compare with what you had. I was curious the other day and had a look Hmm
