Food and Nausea

Hi,

Currently around 12 weeks pregnant and whilst still being sick and feeling nauseous - I'm hoping this will start to pass soon (possibly optimistic!).

I have struggled to eat these past few weeks and the only thing I can tolerate is white carbs. Crisps are my go to nausea killer, nothing works quite the same.

I can already feel the weight piling on and I am horrendously bloated.

Can anyone suggest any other foods which they found helped with the sickness as I would like to try and get back to a healthier diet but continue to keep sickness at bay!

Not a great lot of advice because sadly morning sickness is a bitch and for the majority of the lucky ones passes at 14-17 weeks.

I wouldn’t worry about the bloating, I think it’s less the carbs and more just being pregnant. I was horrendously bloated this pregnancy in the first trimester. It passed though and replaced my a bump 😂
Better than bloating though! You just have to eat what you can stomach :( with my first it was cheese burger lol 😂 so could be worse! This time I binged on fruit but I also had horrendous diarrhoea.. Confused
By 15 weeks it went and my diet sort of went back to normal. I’m not going to lie, i have gained weight but hoping I can drop it after baby is here.

Good luck :) and not long until the sickness passes!

Also, some people swear by ginger, but funnily enough just the smell of ginger would make me want to hurl. So I think it’s about experimenting with foods and just going with what works, and what you can stomach x

I don't know any foods that help, but in general avoid hot food as it smells and makes you feel more sick. Or strong flavours (like sweet)

Fruit, veg, sandwiches, salad, cereal is why I had.

Ugh you have my sympathy and I hope it passes for you soon.

I've been living on carbs too, though I have actually lost some weight since getting pregnant. Nauseous all the time and pretty much gone off all food. It's making me so fed up but like @Blondiejay24 I'm starting to get by just eating whatever I fancy. Last week I had two 'good' days where I had a moment of feeling like I good eat something and gave in and had a Dominos and a Chinese takeaway (not on the same day ha) but mostly it's bland bland carbs and ice lollies.

Going on holiday when I am 13 weeks so was hoping it would have passed but not feeling hopeful!

tisonlymeagain · 09/07/2019 16:43

Oh and can't drink anything, living on blackcurrent squash at the moment as it's all I can stomach and even then it's a struggle to drink more than a pint a day.

noimaginationatall · 09/07/2019 16:51

Thanks all! It's so difficult when all you want is the thing they warn you against!
Carbs and ice lollies have been my saviour. I am struggling to eat much fruit and veg, I try but I just can't face it. Can't tolerate touching/cooking/eating meat really and have been loving off pasta in various forms.
My BMI is already high and I had a big baby last time so I really want to try to minimise impact.
Actual weight gain at the moment is only a few pounds last time I checked less than half a stone.

@noimaginationatall I completely get how you feel from weeks 5-10 I lived off cream crackers and super noodles, hardly a balanced diet but it's all I could stomach and honestly eating something is better than nothing at all!

You can sort your diet out once you start to feel better but I think the key to the first trimester is just surviving! Don't be too hard on yourself!

I lived off of a beige diet in the first trimester, put on loads of weight and was so bloated - I'm now 19+3 and less than my pre pregnancy weight! Don't worry too much, just eat what you can and worry about being healthier when you can stomach it.

Baypony · 09/07/2019 18:33

Another vote here for the beige food. I’m 11+2 and haven’t been able to eat meat since 6 weeks. Everything I loved to eat or drink before makes me either actually sick or feel sick. I can’t drink tea, have chocolate, porridge, any meat, most veg! I have lived of cornflakes (only the expensive ones) as the own brand ones make me sick, fizzy water, plain pasta and the odd bread roll with cheese spread. I’ve also managed a little pink grapefruit juice daily. I’ve lost 6kg 😮. Went to Dr who was not concerned as I was not dehydrated. Had first midwife appt this week, she said just eat what I can when I can and it will pass. Haven’t announce pregnancy yet but all my friends and colleagues are concerned as i’ve lost so much weight, and keep asking if i’m ill. Just eat what you can and don’t worry too much. Hopefully it will pass sooner than later. Good luck!

Don’t be afraid to get signed off for a week. My nausea was so bad I had 2 weeks off. Just so I could lie down and eat little and often. I felt sick from when I opened my eyes to when I closed them. It was grim.

I did find eating little and often helped. If my blood sugars dropped it got worse. A little fizzy sugary pop helped a bit too. And like everyone else, carbs. Nothing spicy. Couldn’t eat much meat. And was always wanting fresh fruit like pineapple strawberries and apples.

noimaginationatall I recommend yoghurt, its seems to work quite well for me in that it has some protein in it but is east to digest x
