Placenta Preevia

Hi All,

Hoping for some insight or experience some of you may have had.

Currently 37+5 weeks pregnant with baby no.2.

Baby1 ended up in emergency section for background information.

I've had weekly scans re placenta preevia which is now classed as grade 1. Around 2.4cm away from the cervix. Trouble is the placenta is seemingly preventing baby from dropping further and he is currently lying on the pelvis due to the placenta being in the way.

Consultant has said to basically wait it out. See if I go into spontaneous labour and if I do just watch for any bleeding of the placenta and if babies head drops.

I am very anxious about this. I had a very traumatic first labour and have since done hypnobirthing this time around to try and calm my mind. But this is throwing me. I don't know what should be done for the best. An elective section or await labour and hope for the best?

Do any of you have any experience at all?

Thank you

I don't have any previous experience I'm afraid but I too have been told I have placenta praevia. All I know from my 20
Week scan is that mine is very low and is completely blocking my cervix. I have a scan again at 30 and 34 weeks (mainly due to being in my forties) but they will also check on my placenta. I was hoping to have VBAC if it moves out the way (both my children before ended up with c-section as for some reason I didn't dilate past 3cm). I'm hoping to go in to labour naturally (if I can if placenta moves) and will see what happens. At this stage I don't want to book in for elective c-section as I want to experience some (or possibly all) of the labour naturally. If nearer the time I have to book in for elective though that's fine, I'll go with what is advised. I have 14 weeks left to see what happens.

Just go with whatever you gut is telling you to do. As long as your healthcare are aware of your situation you will be looked after. Good luck. Smile

Is your placenta anterior or posterior?

I went for my placenta scan on Monday as I had this too (32 weeks now) and it had moved. The midwife scanning me told me that the margins they look for are 2.5cm clear if anterior, and 3cm clear if posterior. It sounds like yours is very very close to the mark depending on the location.

I’d book in ASAP to talk it over with the midwife or consultant if you can. I have anxiety over bleeding and the last few weeks before this scan have seen me worrying a lot about the possible repercussions of going into labour with previa so I understand how this can make you feel!

Thank you for the reply.

It is a posterior placenta preavia looking at the consultant report 2.1cm away from internal OS but coming into lower segment over pelvic.. Babies head is up against it.

I'm going to call my midwife today I think, I'm just too anxious about it all, possibly more so since my last ended in in EMCS too. The 'Plan' written is that vaginal delivery may be achieved but to await spontaneous labour if head enters pelvis and bleeds then EMCS.
