Experiences of cyclizine for pregnancy nausea

I have scanned some old threads where people have said that cyclizine helped for vomiting but did nothing for the nausea.

I am not vomiting (yet) but the nausea is unbearable. I am only 6 weeks and I don't know how I'm going to manage.

I would love to take cyclizine if it will help with the nausea but there seems no point if it will knock me out too and do nothing for the nausea.

I have tried all the usual stuff - ginger, eating little and often, seabands etc. Nothing works.

Is there anyone who has found cyclizine helps for the nausea?

So I’m 10+5 and have had severe nausea and vomiting since I’ve been around 5/6 weeks. I was fed up of people telling me to eat ginger, use sea bands etc as none of it worked. I was then given medication and that did stop the vomiting but not the nausea. I had to stop taking it though as it made me extremely restless at night and I couldn’t sleep. I have been so ill for well over a month now and it’s so so hard but the only thing I’ve found helps slightly is eating small snacks regularly. It doesn’t help greatly but nothing is for me. I feel now I’m nearing the end of the first trimester it’s easing ever so slightly. I still feel sick for most of the day and I’m throwing up everyday but not as much as I was.
Good luck, try the medication. It might work for you.

Go to the GP, and keep going back! There are a few different medications to be tried.

It helped with my nausea as well as the vomiting. It didn’t get rid of it entirely but it helped.

I suffered throughout my whole pregnancy with HG, was given cyclizine for the first 18 weeks, it stopped me being sick but not the nausea. Finally given ranitidine at 20 weeks and that helped with the nausea too.

I'm 34 weeks and sufferers really terrible sickness with this Pregnancy. Really kicked in at 6 weeks and was really suffering badly right up to 26-28 weeks and still have off days.
My advice to you would be to get in early doors with medication. They will likely start you off in the cyclizine but to be honest I found that it had little effect on the nausea and made me extremely drowsy.
Buccastem also has little effect.
The best was ondansetron. They give it to chemo patients for nausea.
I was lucky enough to get a GP who had formerly worked in obstetrics so knew all about preg sickness and was more than happy to prescribe. You may have to push a little to get it. It's the only thing that took the edge off did me.
Good luck. It really is miserable suffering with preg sickness. I feel did you.

It helped me with the nausea but it made me very sleepy and woolly headed so I only took it when I was desperate or in the evening when I wanted to sleep anyway.

mrshadders · 08/07/2019 17:21

Cyclizine was brilliantly successful for me. It got rid of my sickness and nausea and I didn't experience any side effects. I was vomiting 5 times a day and nauseous all day until I started it and was able to get married and go on honeymoon thanks to it!

DeadDoorpost · 08/07/2019 17:24

Cyclizine helped with my HG but can often work better as a combination with something else like ondansetron or Prochlorperazine. Speak to your GP about it as the worse it gets the harder it is to combat it

Seeline · 08/07/2019 17:32

Worked for me. Stopped the nausea, and was only sick a few times after I started it. However, like others, I did feel very drowsy and out of it.

Stringervest · 08/07/2019 18:45

Thank you everyone for the advice. I had seen it mentioned that cyclizine acts on the part of the brain which deals with nausea and vomiting, but then others posting on here said that it was only an anti-emetic and would not stop nausea. It is helpful to hear some of your stories.

Thanks to those who are currently suffering too. It is pure torture.

I was given promethazine, I like you wasn't physically sick but couldn't cope with the nausea any longer. They are basically just travel sickness tablets I think but they worked xxx

GookledyGobb · 08/07/2019 19:39

It worked on the nausea for me in two pregnancies to the degree I went from bed bound to able to look after a toddler the first time I took it. Good luck with finding what works for you

Stringervest · 08/07/2019 20:31

Thank you. This is very reassuring. I am bed bound in the evenings at the moment and I can't see the light at the end of the tunnel. I'm going to try and see a doctor tomorrow.

I can't even imagine how women with HG do this.

I have been taking it for quite a few weeks and it has definitely helped. The horrible side effects eased after a few days. I also take omeprazole for indigestion as during the day everything I beat basically just piles up in my stomach Envy I have to be religious about taking it 3 times daily and have to eat carefully too - more than one small breakfast, mid morning snack, nothing too heavy for dinner. Definitely worth trying but it may take a few days to start working. Good luck

Em39ma · 08/07/2019 20:51

I’m on cyclizine and omperzole. I was very poorly before starting them, but I’m now able to function. Would completely recommend it. I would ask to go on both. If I feel sick now it because I have forgotten one of my doses

GoldPaperStars · 08/07/2019 21:00

Please go to your GP and ask for help. If they’re unhelpful then ask to see another one. You might not find a drug that gets rid of the nausea entirely (I’ve yet to), but you definitely deserve some help. If you’re feeling desperate then look up Pregnancy Sickness Support - I honestly believe their advice saved my mind!

Stringervest · 08/07/2019 21:32

Thank you everyone. Isn't it silly that I feel like crying because you've all been so nice in validating how crap I feel.

I haven't heard of omeprazole but I feel like the mountains of food I'm eating are not coming out (sorry tmi) so perhaps I need to investigate that now.

If men had to go through this shit there would definitely be a better way to do it by now.

Omeprazole isn’t anti sickness, it’s used to treat heartburn. It reduces the amount of stomach acid you produce. My daughter was on it for silent reflux as a baby & I had to take it for a few months following a stomach ulcer!

I was given cyclizine & it did nothing but send me to sleep. Not ideal with an hours commute each way to work. I was then given Ondanestron & it stopped all vomiting but not so much the nausea. But I found I could cope with the nausea knowing I was unlikely to throw up!
