Aldis nappies gave my baby nappy rash

When I used Aldi's nappies size 4+, my baby got his FIRST ever nappy rash, and it was REALLY BAD. It scarred up his beautiful bottom. I was perplexed as to why. Then I smelled the new nappies and gagged at the strong chemical smell. I contacted Aldis, informed them what happened, and that, contrary to their packaging label- the nappies are NOT hypoallergenic. They asked me to drop the nappies back to store and fill in a form. I did so, even thought I had a baby in tow, and it took me half a day. The store manager agreed the nappies smelled very bad and filled in the form with me.

I never heard back from Aldis HQ, when I followed up, they told me the nappies had not been sent in and the store could not find them, and that they needed the batch number which was ON THE NAPPIES not the package.
The manager who filled in the form did not even know about batch numbers.
I told the "customer service " rep that no one told me about batch numbers but in any event, all the 4+ and up nappies reek of chemicals. The rep told me there were no chemicals used.

I do not believe there are no chemicals used, there was no real apology or attempt to resolve this matter - they were not interested in looking into the matter- the rep was just really defensive. They call you right away when you lodge a complaint, feign concern about your baby - make you run around to prove the matter but then don't bother to investigate - the follow up is insincere.

I have gone back to the more expensive Pampers but they do not cause nappy rash, do not smell of chemicals, and they are thinner but hold more liquid.

Poor little baby's bum - still marked up.

Sorry about your baby's happy rash OP and the poor service you seem to have had from Aldi. You've done the right thing by switching to a brand that is better suited.

Have you tried the Naty nappies? We've used them ever since DS was born and they are the most gentle nappies out there that we've found and they are much better for the environment tab Pampers.

I would say though that probably all nappies contain some amount of 'chemicals' as that's what makes up most products.

Most companies don't have a policy of actually telling you the outcome of any investigation (though I understand that it doesn't seem like they even did one in your case).

You're clearly still upset about this so why not send Aldi another email stating how disappointed you felt in the quality of service and lack of communication you received from them regarding your complaint. Try not to be too emotive/point fingers in your response as this doesn't ever really get you anywhere.

What kind of response were you after from them?

FlatPackRat, thank you very much for your constructive response.
I will try the Naty, thanks for that.
Next to my family, my time is the most valuable thing- and I don't even own that! And so - for no charge, I gave a chunk of that time to Aldis in the hope that they would look into the matter and that it may benefit other babies. I gave more time after they failed to take action. I am not going to give them more of my time because I don't have any more to give and they have a "computer says no" attitude at the customer service level.

Despite the horrid damage to my baby's skin, my feedback to them was polite and measured. On this forum, I think that it is okay to emote.
What did I want? An investigation - an honest account to me and the public of what does in to their nappies,
I do not accept that we should expect chemicals to be used in nappies when the packaging claims it to be hypoallergenic.

Chemicals are used in making all nappies. Pampers included.

You've had shit customer service, agreed, but it sounds like a one off reaction rather than a widespread problem.

DD couldn't use Asda little angels nappies as she got nappy rash. Pampers were what I always used.

So you've got every right to complain about the poor customer service, but Aldi nappies are made the same way as all the other disposables, so I can't see why that's an issue.

Mamamooligans · 07/07/2019 14:04

ALL disposable nappies are filled with nasty chemicals, including pampers! How strange for Aldi to say they don't have any, all disposables do. Look at the eco friendly ones for less chemicals but note they still do have chemicals in. Although less likely to cause a chemical burn than others. Disposable nappies have been linked to rise in certain types of cancers and infertility issues, which really isn't surprising if you consider what is actually in them!
For the healthiest bottom, go to your nearest nappy library, borrow some cloth nappies, figure out what you like best and go from there.

Everything even water is made from ‘chemicals’.

Maizy2017 · 07/07/2019 16:07

I found the larger size Aldi nappies have a particularly strong chemical odour out of the pack, it is the only time baby got a rash. these are the facts,

Unless you are in the business IntheHeatofLisbon, how would you know if it was a wide spread problem? What do you call a "wide spread problem" . 10, 20, 100, 10,000? Odd, that's one of the reasoning the "customer service rep" gave for Aldi's not seeing the need to look into it; even though there are other parents who have had similar experiences. When it is your baby whose perfect skin is scarred because of a reaction to the chemicals in a nappy, then you may understand how provoking that excuse is.
I did not have this problem with the Aldi's smaller nappies
I've used many others - from Sainsburys, Asda, Tescos own brands etc., not had this problem,

what has exacerbated this is Aldi's indifference and their labelling that their nappies are dermatological friendly.

thank you Mamooligans, great idea, infact, our local council give out very fancy and amazing washable nappies just to encourage parents to avoid non-biodegradable disposables.

I will take naty into hospital with me and maybe for a week at home but as soon as I feel able after my section I will be on the reusable cloth ones! I love reusable nappies! Used them with my youngest and can’t wait to use them again x

icecreamsundae32 · 07/07/2019 18:30

We had this chemical burns with my oldest with pampers active fit 10 years ago! We contacted them and were fobbed off despite having photos of chemical burn peel on his bottom and drs report saying it was in all probability caused by chemicals in the nappy!

And yesterday my youngest has had a very bad reaction in Lidl pull ups! I won't be using them again!
