worried about blue cheese

hello,

probably over worrying but I ate a minuscule piece of tortellini that had ricotta, smoke ham and gorgonzola cheese in it about an hour ago. I'm now worrying about listeria! should this be okay since I only ate a tiny amount (literally half a piece of tortellini until I suddenly thought to check and threw the rest away) and it was cooked?

ahh so much to worry about!

thank you x

It was cooked, it is absolutely fine to eat the whole bowl.

BikeRunSki · 06/07/2019 19:57

Stop worrying. It was cooked and tiny.

When i suspected I was pg with dc2, but had not confirmed it, I deliberately ate a big chunk of Stilton “whilst I still can”.

My DSis lives in France and has been pg there twice. There are no banned foods for pg women in France.

Yup, Listeria is killed by pasteurisation or cooking above 65C. But it can survive in the fridge and multiply even at temps as low as 2C, so don’t eat uncooked unpasteurised cheeses.
Shame about your wasted dinner- it sounded yummy!

AnnaMagnani · 06/07/2019 19:59

It's soft cheese like brie or camembert not blue cheese that you aren't supposed to eat.

Babdoc · 06/07/2019 20:01

Bikerunski, Stilton is pasteurised, so you could have carried on and filled your boots right through pregnancy!

BikeRunSki · 06/07/2019 20:06

@Babdoc a now you tell me! Pretty sure it was “banned” at the time (nearly 12 years ago). As it happens, 2 or 3 works later I developed hyperemisis and ate hardly anything for the rest of my pregnancy.

PrincessSarene · 06/07/2019 20:06

The no soft cheese rule also applies to unpasteurised soft blue cheeses such as gorgonzola or roquefort. However as already pointed out, Stilton is fine as are other hard blue cheeses.

OP, all cheese is fine if it has been cooked. So nothing to worry about and next time you can eat the whole lot and enjoy Smile

@BikeRunSki, you could have eaten Stilton throughout. The NHS specifically states that hard blue cheese isn’t a concern.

By the way, as this myth won’t die, French government advice to pregnant women is almost exactly the same as NHS (and in some cases is more restrictive - advice is to avoid ready-grated cheese and soya too, for example). The main difference is that French women are routinely screened for toxoplasmosis antibodies and therefore know if they can eat rare steak etc with impunity.

thanks for all the comments - yeah was definitley cooked and was a pre packaged one from the supermarket that my mum thinks would of been cooked already anyway and essentially all I was doing was "heating it up" when boiling. I'm not sure if the UK is as strict as the US on pasteruizing but I will try and accept that as I cooked it I should be okay! 🤞 such a panicky time! x
