Sudden quick burst of extreme movement?

37 weeks, had midwife this morning and all was well. Just sat on the sofa, baby moving about as normal and then suddenly went absolutely crazy. Only for about 5 seconds, so really short period of time but definitely the most aggressive movement I've had. My entire stomach was rippling.

Of course my brain has instantly jumped to the worst conclusions, he's never done that before so I'm worried somethings wrong? He's still moving after it, just the normal amount. Anyone?

All guidance says that any Change in movement needs to be checked out, and some literature says that sudden movement like you describe can be a sign of distress.

I asked my midwife about it, she said they are not usually concerned about increased movement...

No one can tell you that all is well. If you’re worried, call the maternity assessment unit.

Could've just rolled over, always felt mad when my lo did that. But like a pp said, any concerns always ring

I had a very similar experience at 38 weeks with my second baby- it was in the night and I phoned up and went in to be checked over.

All was absolutely fine, but any change in movements needs to be checked. Definitely phone for advice.

HAs the baby gone back to moving normally? If it has, then that is a good sign. They get so big at the end of pregnancy that it feels much more intense when they do a big manover like rolling over. If the normal movement has dropped off, then call to get it checked out. If you just feel uneasy, then call to get it checked out. Mothers intuition is the most important thing in this

Baby went back to moving normally literally straight after it. I'm only hesitant to ring as I've had midwife and a CTG monitoring done at 11 and everything was normal! It was so brief it was just very frantic!

I had this a few times when the baby was changing positions in late pregnancy, but deffo ring just to get peace of mind op.

SeaToSki · 05/07/2019 12:57

The baby doesnt know you were just checked. Sometimes the timing of things sucks, but you have to go with your gut. Never not do something that could be v important because you are worried about looking foolish. Better foolish than heartbroken

Insertwitticismhere · 05/07/2019 12:57

I'd ring/ go in for advice if for no other reason than worrying about it is not good for you or the baby.

I've had this a couple of times - once he had a massive massive wriggle and then proceeded to give himself hiccups. My midwife laughed when I told her. He also does it to let me know that he does not approve of me eating anything spicy. That said, if it's new for you then I'd always err on the side of caution.

Justincase87 · 05/07/2019 14:06

I'm 37 weeks and went in with this on Monday (I rang up saying I felt like the baby was frantic and trapped which is what it felt like to me!) - I felt like a massive idiot going in and felt like the midwives thought the same BUT they were absolutely lovely and said they'd rather you came in than sat at home and worried yourself because stressing isn't good for anyone!

NeverTalksToStrangers · 05/07/2019 14:08

I've had this with my first also. Everything was fine.
