Spotting at six weeks - good/bad outcomes

Hi all,

I’m five weeks six days pregnant and last night I had a small amount of brownish spotting in my pants and I’d been having mild cramps all evening. I had nothing for the rest of the night but I’ve had it more this morning, now that I’m up and moving around. I want to say it’s normal and nothing to worry about, but the cramps feel different to how they have been so far. They feel more period-y, if that makes any sense, but they come and go and are only mostly mild to medium in severity.

Is anyone out there able to share whether they went through something similar? If you miscarried then how long did it take for the spotting to turn red and into a real flow?

Thanks all. Ugh, this is horrible.

Hey OP I'm 10 weeks with my first so I can only go on my own experience over the passed few weeks. I got a lot of brown spotting and period like cramps from when I found out until about 7 weeks when I had a slightly bleed (red blood but no cramps) which freaked me the hell out!

I rang the midwife and she explained that spotting and bleeding in early pregnancy are completely normal, if you consider that your uterus is rapidly expanding it's bond to cause some discomfort hence the cramps. Also much like your nose, our vaginas have more blood cells than other places and sometimes they just bleed without a specific reason. The advice she gave me was to rest and monitor the bleeding/cramps and if it became unmanageable (as in paracetamol won't ease it) or the bleeding becomes extremely heavy then to call back.

I can't say that it doesn't mean something sinister is going on but I can say that worrying about isn't going to do you or baby any good (easier said than done I know!). If you're really worried then please contact your midwife as the above is only my experience.

Hope you start to feel better soon Flowers

I've bleed on all my pregnancies.

DS1 I didn't know I was pregnant until about 12 weeks because I though I'd had my normal light periods!

DS2 bleed all the way through (very stressful) he's just turned 1.

Pregnant with #3 and hd spotting in first trimester and a few minor bleeds since. Currently 21 weeks.

For me the midwifes think it's just one of those things.

I've also had 3 miscarriages bleeding started and didn't stop for those turned red very quickly and within a few days babies were lost. I had them at 12, 11 and 6 weeks

I've had 3 separate episodes of spotting so far, never a lot and has been quite dark. I was told it was quite common. After the second i had an early scan at the EPU and we saw a heart beat. Measuring slightly behind but they couldn't get a very clear picture and weren't concerned at this stage. This my first pregnancy so nothing to compare it to. We have another scan booked in a couple of weeks so I'm hoping to get some more reassurance from that as it's still early days.
Can you speak to the early pregnancy unit for advice? Some units will let you self refer. I hope everything settles soon and it's nothing to worry about.

I've had a couple of brown bloody discharge instances and one small pink/red bleed between 5-7 weeks, i had nothing with dc1 so freaked out. 18 weeks now and all going well so far, the epau found a small hematoma which could have caused some bleeding, and usually is brown.

It's all healed up now and baby healthy as of yesterday's anomaly scan.

Keep an eye on the spotting and cramping and if you're worried have a look at your local early pregnancy assessment unit- some you can self refer but others you need your gp to refer you.

Hi there, I had this for about a week at 6/7 weeks, panicked so much at first (and had previous miscarriage) but it never got heavy, and eventually went away. I am now 29 weeks pregnant!

Also I know its different for everyone but the cramp/pain I felt when I did have the miscarriage was extremely different to that of uterus cramping during pregnancy. Lasted for one night and went from mild to awful really quickly, and then nothing at all.

Hope this helps, and I know it's easy to say but please try not to worry as much as you can. Spotting is so common.

Thank you so much for replying to all of you, this has really helped me throughout the day. I'm still spotting but it's light and still just brown so I'm really hoping it's ok.

I had a bleed at 7 weeks and I’m now 24 weeks pregnant.
They scanned me as I had a miscarriage last year, could see the bleed to one side of the baby. It had completely gone by 12 weeks scan.
With my miscarriage I did bleed until 2 weeks after we had found out there wasn’t a heart beat.

Hi @WingingItOverHere - I had a bleed for a few hours at 5+3; it wasn't just spotting, it felt like a proper period and I was devastated. Sat in the EPU in floods of tears wondering if I had enough strength to go through yet another round of IVF. Had a couple of scans over the following two weeks, all seemed to be okay, and I'm currently 15 weeks. I'm so incredibly grateful!

I've read that spotting, pink and brown-ish blood with only mild/moderate cramping is very common so I'm crossing my fingers for you that everything will be fine 💐

Can you get a scan in a few days time? At six weeks a heartbeat can usually be seen.

Morningchorus · 03/07/2019 18:08

Hey OP!
Like someone above, I had spotting from 6+5, ongoing now at 8 weeks. Some days it feels like there is a decent amount, and I was really stressed.
I spoke to midwife earlier this week and they scanned me today. They found a small bleed, not involving sac, near cervix and said it may continue to cause spotting but nothing to worry about.
Baby measuring perfect, heartbeat seen. Positive outcome!
Fingers crossed for you 🤞😊

Spotted early with two healthy pregnancies. Also spotted with ectopic, but that was brown black and accompanied by fainting and shoulder pain. So a bit different.

VenusStarr · 03/07/2019 18:42

Hi OP. Sorry you're having this worry.

Brown spotting for me didn't have a happy ending unfortunately. I had an early scan at epu which initially looked like a blighted ovum (empty sac) but at the follow up scan 2 weeks later there was a 5 week pregnancy yolk and sac, completely out of sync with my dates. I had heavy brown clots which turned to red flow / cramps a few days later.

I had the first initial spotting at 6+3 and miscarried naturally at 9+4.

Really hope you have a positive outcome Flowers

Brown spotting in pregnancy between 5/6 weeks has never ended well for me either and I've lost 3 pregnancies between 5-6 weeks - I would maybe monitor with a couple of clearblue digital with weeks to see if they start to go down? In April I started brown spotting at 5 weeks exactly and miscarried fully 6 days later x
