@Mumoftwox - I use this method - I usually do approx 1/3 of the feed boiling water from the flask and 2/3 cold water (measured out separately and added, not just topped up). It's roughly what the perfect prep machine does.

For a 5 ounce feed I'd do 2 ounces boiling and 3 ounces cold - that may be a little warm for baby so would need to cool. For feed sizes that don't nicely split into thirds (as whole ounces) I always do a higher percentage of hot as I think it's safer.

@Mumoftwox - I put the boiling water straight into the flask as it will cool through the day. Just be aware that if you're making multiple feeds, the water will start to cool quicker as you use more of it. I tested the water with a temperature probe at home before being brave enough to use this method. I have a 350ml flask that I take if we just out for about 4 hours and one feed but a 500ml flask if I need to do 2 feeds. The 350ml flask cools too quickly. If we're out any longer than that, I take ready made formula and use the remaining hot water to warm them as it's fine for that but I wouldn't risk it with powder. I also have proper thermos branded flasks.

This may all be a bit excessive - most of my friends seem to just tip powder into warm water and their babies have never been ill from it, but I don't want to take a chance!

Use the stainless steel flasks too. Ours from John Lewis actually did stay piping hot for almost 24 hpurs(not that we used it for that long obviously.
