14 weeks and 3 days pregnant and just been told that I am having twins!!!!
Apparently I have a twin pregnancy with separate sacs. What does this mean??
Also.. how can I be having twins when there aren't any in even my husband or my side of family? No fertility treatment has been used

It means you released 2 eggs and they are non identical

thecompanyplonker · 01/07/2019 18:30

Congratulations!!

liitlepenguin · 01/07/2019 18:37

Congratulations Grin

Two eggs released at the same time

Non iD twins don't run in the family!

Twins are great fun ! I have a set

Cosmogirl86 · 01/07/2019 18:39

Congrats! Do you have two placenta also? My twins have a sac each but share a placenta! I am chuffed for you.

Carrying twins is hard at times but I'm very excited!

Rememberallball · 01/07/2019 21:29

Not necessarily. OP doesn’t say that they have separate placentas so they could be MCDA twins, therefore identical - some hospitals don’t specifically visualise the placenta/s until the 20 week anomaly scan.

Or, it could be that the egg completely split around 5-8 days post fertilisation where they would appear to be DCDA twins but remain identical (this has been raised as a possibility for my twins)

boodles101 · 02/07/2019 07:13

Congrats, as above do you know if you have 1 placenta or 2? I'm currently 29 weeks pregnant with DCDA (2 sacs, 2placentas) twins and it was a shock to me too. No twins running in my family but I guess they have to start in a family somewhere! It did take me a week or so to get over the shock.

Kinsters · 02/07/2019 08:02

Even with two placentas it could still be one egg that split in two just really early on! When me and my sister were born my mum was told we were non-identical because there were two placentas - 23 years later we did a DNA test that confirmed we are identical twins.

Identical twins are pure luck whereas non-identical twins can run in families if the family, for example, has a gene that means the women are more likely to ovulate more than one egg at a time.

Congratulations. Take folic acid and iron supplements. Maybe book maternity leave a little earlier than you'd planned to.

FairyDust92 · 02/07/2019 09:34

Congratulations!
Doesn't have to run in the family, you've just been blessed with 2 😊

34unsure · 02/07/2019 16:33

Twin pregnancy with separate sacs and separate placentas . Is that normal?

OP posts:
Abi58 · 02/07/2019 16:36

Congratulations! I'm not sure about the sac and placentas sorry

Bobbindobbin · 02/07/2019 16:41

None ID twins DO run in families, the identical ones are the non genetic ones (the fertilised egg splits in a freak of nature) Non ID twins are genetic and passed down the female line and has nothing to do with the fathers side whatsoever

Bobbindobbin · 02/07/2019 16:42

And yes that’s normal, my Non ID twins had separate sacs and placenta x.

personalsummer · 02/07/2019 16:57

Another one here, non identical, two sacs, two placentas no family history of twins (do 2nd cousins count?) and no fertility treatment. Congratulations!

boodles101 · 02/07/2019 17:16

34unsure yes it's normal. Your twins will be DCDA which are lower risk than babies with one placenta. You should expect to meet with a consultant who can explain more and answer any questions you might have. You will get 4 weekly scans from 20 weeks as a minimum just to check on how the babies are growing. Your babies have around a 30% chance of being identical if they are the same sex. Feel free to ask me anymore questions. Congrats

MrHaroldFry · 02/07/2019 17:29

Congratulations OP. I was immensely shocked when told at 11weeks I was expecting twins. No recorded history in the family. Mine were boy girls twins so obviously not identical Smile
Remember to eat properly, take lots of rest (growing two humans is a tiring business) and consider finishing work earlier than you might have originally planned.
We are here is you have additional questions.
