Drinking Alcohol before I knew I was pregnant .. Help!

Hi All,

I believe I'm pregnant - It's been 15 days since my partner had sex and I'm not completely certain that I'm pregnant as my period is due in a few days so it's early; but I did a pregnancy test today and there is a very faint line - plus i started getting symptoms about a week ago and I'm convinced.

However, I'm extremely worried as with it being summer now, I have drunk alcohol on 3 separate occasions in the last 2 weeks. (The first time was 2 glasses of wine over about 2 hours, the second probably about 3 glasses with food one evening and the third was one at both lunch at dinner about 4 hours apart).

I'm now extremely worried that the alcohol I have consumed will lead to foetal alcohol syndrome. Everything on google has completely freaked me out! I wasn't trying for a baby but I would love to be a mum and I haven't told anyone yet, not even my partner, as I don't want to worry them.

I was wondering if anyone has experienced the same situation or if you have any information that could advise me, I would greatly appreciate that :)

Thanks,

OP, I did the same. I think almost everyone I know drank before they knew they were pregnant. Please don't worry.

Please try not to worry too much, I know several women that drank alcohol before they knew they were pregnant, my DDIL included. Their babies are all fine.
Foetal alcohol syndrome is more common in pregnant women who drink heavily every day.
Mention it to your midwife/ doctor at your first appointment and I hope they'll be able to reassure you.
Google is not your friend now, you'll just get even more scared.

The vast majority of people do it as they do not know they are pregnant. I drank way more than you. It’ll be absolutely fine.

I fell pregnant just before the really hot weather last year, cause of the weather and I wasn't working at the time we had lots of bbqs and social gatherings all of which involved a little too much alcohol at times. I was actually drunk the day before I found out I was pregnant. (I don't have a problem haha)
My boy is 18weeks old and is a happy healthy little chap. I was terrified I had caused him some sort of damage. Don't worry. Soooo many people will have done he same xx

Don't worry.

If you're pregnant, you're baby probably hasn't had any alcohol at all.

Implantation doesn't happen until roughly around when your period is due.

Before implantation, it lives on its own 'egg white' which if you think of the baby as being the yolk (bit like a hens egg) makes perfect sense.

It is only at implantation that the baby starts to live off your blood supply.

I did it. My son grew up into a fine specimen and is doing his Masters in Engineering. I think that it's a lot of alcohol through your pregnancy that is the problem.

Two days before I found out I was pregnant I drank half a bottle of wine, smoked three cigarettes and consumed a plateful of pâté.

Midwife said I wouldn't even have had a placenta at the time so it's nothing to worry about.

AriadneesWeb · 30/06/2019 23:16

Yes I was going to say the placenta hasn’t formed that early so the baby isn’t connected to your blood supply anyway.

FannyFeatures · 30/06/2019 23:30

This is a very common worry.

If you're pregnant, the foetus won't have developed a direct line supply to you at such an early stage so no alcohol would have been absorbed by it.

However, even if you were further on it takes a lot of continuous drinking for a foetus to develop FAS so a few glasses here or there wouldn't necessarily cause damage anyway.

I was over a week late when I tested because aid lost track of time. I was off work and it was the week before Christmas so I'd spent most of that week out with friends and drinking wine. When I asked my midwife, she was totally unconcerned.
