Hey guys,

Im 26 weeks, I have my GD test on Monday at 09:05... my mum and sister are both type 1 so it's made me more likely to have it. Currently not overweight and I eat reasonably well though, could probably eat better on weekends.

I told my manager I'd be in work after it (office job) I'm just wondering if that's wise? I thought I'd be fine but read up a lot on people being sick and feeling generally crappy after it? I know it'll take a few hours so I'm looking at getting to work about 1pm so basically only going to be in work for 4 hours so I can cope feeling crappy

Just looking for advice really on what to expect?

I felt fine, just hungry!

cakesandphotos · 29/06/2019 10:00

I was fine after my hospital breakfast! My dad has type 1 but I didn't have GD so fingers crossed you're ok!

melissa1215 · 29/06/2019 10:04

Thanks for the replies guys, I'll make sure to bring some food to have a late lunch when I'm allowed to eat again.. fingers crossed I don't have it

I had it done at 34+6 and I felt fine. I bit tired and bored after having to sit for 2 hours.

Take a straw and the drink doesn’t taste great.

HippoRampage · 29/06/2019 10:11

I felt fine afterwards. Defo take some snacks for after the 2nd test and something to watch/read!

oyoyoy · 29/06/2019 10:13

Your diet doesn't influence whether or not you have GD- it's to do with the placenta. Good luck for your appointment.

annonymousse · 29/06/2019 10:21

It has nothing to do with the placenta 🤦🏻‍♀️

Pomfluff · 29/06/2019 10:42

GD is related to hormones produced by the placenta which sometimes cause insulin resistance. However diet can definitely play a role which is why most women are given a few weeks to control GD through lifestyle factors.

Regarding the glucose test, if you feel sick it will normally happen within the first hour of the drink. I had to take 3 GTTs the past year and didn't have any problems at all. I only felt quite tired during the phase when your blood sugar is coming down, which sometimes lingered for 3-4 hours after the test. Though it was definitely not so bad that I couldn't work, and had a normal day after all three tests.

mynameiscalypso · 29/06/2019 10:46

I was totally fine - I took my laptop with me and was working most of the time (as were quite a few other people).

olderthanyouthink · 29/06/2019 10:52

I think I would have been fine if I wasn't so stressed by needles (I made a scene for each and every blood test, in that bad)

boodles101 · 29/06/2019 11:11

I had mine last week and was fine. The drink just tasted like a strong orange squash to me, it wasn't at all bad. I felt a little bit funny about 2 hours after the 2nd blood test, more like a come down from a sugar rush. But nothing a bit of food and drink didn't sort out. I was fine to be at work.

Beldon · 29/06/2019 11:31

I was fine, just hungry and very thirsty. Having just sips of water since 10pm the night before in this heat was tough. I had first blood test just after 9pm then drank the liquid. Just tasted like sugary water so not pleasant but certainly didn’t make me sick. 2nd blood test at 11.30am then free to leave.
Pack yourself some nice lunch and some water/juice to have right away and you will be fine for going back to work.

WinterRose92 · 29/06/2019 17:30

I’ve had it twice before - with my first pregnancy I felt really ill after. Really sick and loads of heartburn.
Currently 30 weeks pregnant with my second and had it again 3 weeks back. I was dreading it because of last time but I actually felt okay this time.
But yeah, it does get a bit boring waiting around for 2 hours so make sure you have stuff to do - I took magazines for puzzles etc.
Good luck!

firefly · 29/06/2019 20:58

I had mine last Monday at 35 weeks. I had a headache afterwards and felt a bit irritable all day. It's boring and a pain, but overall was ok.

firefly · 29/06/2019 20:58

Woops. 25 weeks. Same as you. Dad is type 1... All came up ok

MakeAWhish · 29/06/2019 21:04

@annonymousse please educate yourself;
During pregnancy, the placenta, which connects your baby to your blood supply, produces high levels of various other hormones. Almost all of them impair the action of insulin in your cells, raising your blood sugar. Modest elevation of blood sugar after meals is normal during pregnancy.
As your baby grows, the placenta produces more and more insulin-counteracting hormones. In gestational diabetes, the placental hormones provoke a rise in blood sugar to a level that can affect the growth and welfare of your baby. Gestational diabetes usually develops during the last half of pregnancy — sometimes as early as the 20th week, but generally not until later.

oyoyoy · 30/06/2019 02:28

@MakeAWhish- thank you for that. I'm sure I've read the same a million times. Wish people would do some research before trying to discredit others.

melissa1215 · 01/07/2019 17:15

Thanks for all the replies guys, I had the test - pretty okay, just boring waiting around. The drink was fine and I felt normal the entire time.

I asked when I would find out the results, she said she didn't know (very helpful?!) im assuming if there is an issue they'll contact me or my midwife will raise it at my next appt but hopefully all is fine

hormonesorDHbeingadick · 01/07/2019 18:16

I was told to ring for the results the following day.

Triskaidekaphilia · 02/07/2019 11:43

I felt crap until I had some lunch, then I was fine Smile

QuickRedFox · 02/07/2019 11:53

I felt horrendous, but then I did have GD. The two other people I know who had (both with BMIs of 18, you don’t have to be overweight to get it) it also had to go to bed for the rest of the day.

Triskaidekaphilia · 02/07/2019 12:19

With mine they said they'd call if there was an issue or if I didn't hear anything then everything was fine. But I had a MW appt the next day so she double checked for me. If you're concerned I'd call mw or hospital tomorrow.

cupoftea84 · 02/07/2019 12:35

I was fine after it. What really annoyed me was the men in the waiting room eating chocolate and crisps. The waiting room where they only put pregnant women who are fasting (and dads to be that insisted on tagging along) I'm surprised any made it out alive.

Triskaidekaphilia · 03/07/2019 10:23

Did anyone else really like the drink? It was like lucozade before they messed with the recipe, except sadly not fizzy Grin
