Over the counter anti acid?

Extra strength Gaviscon just isn't cutting it, the acid is so annoying I'm getting awful pain in my chest and upper back. I've seen mentions of stronger anti aids I can get over her counter, does anyone know what they are and if they're safe during pregnancy?

Thanks

My GP told me to buy Ranitidine from the supermarket (avoiding pharmacists) it worked well for me but do check with your care givers first

Over the counter Ranitidine is a good start, but the strongest available is 75g. If your GP gives you a prescription it’s likely they’ll prescribe 150g twice a day, which is obvs more effective.
When that stopped working for me the GP prescribed Omaprazol, which is amazing!
Can you get an appointment with your GP?

I’ve gone onto omeprazole from being on a combination of Gaviscon and Rennie’s since Easter time. It is making a difference already so might be worth you speaking to your surgery

Ranitidine as PPs have said.

Zantac is the branded name

yes - it's half strength - so take 2 if you need to.

Works in minutes for me

Ranitidine

PatricksRum · 28/06/2019 04:05

Omeprazole or Ranitidine are safe during pregnancy.
I prefer Omeprazole.

Wilkos own brand tablets worked absolute wonders for me!

Treefloof · 28/06/2019 05:18

Ranitidine, if you buy OTC they are not strong so take two. They work quickly and are cheap. I buy mine from the pound shop

Ranitidine and gaviscon just didn't work for me.

I'm prescribed omeprosole from the docs now and it's a life changer GrinSmile

Thank you everyone! So I picked up the 75mg ranitidine yesterday and took 2 and I think it definitely helped! Unfortunately my GP is very very converative when it comes to prescribing anything during pregnancy so going to see her is pointless! It's so strange because I've seen some people get prescribed meds for sickness very early in their pregnancy while I was suffered soo much with nausea and she would t give me anything. Kinda unfair!

I take Lansoprazole 30mg which is amazing but prescription only. Omeprazole is similar (PPI) which can be bought OTC as Nexium. Are you a member of Costco, as it can be bought cheaply there.

Middledistancerunner · 29/06/2019 15:37

OP I think your GP will prescribe differently for heartburn/indigestion than from nausea.
Most GP’s I’ve come access (only on third pregnancy so not a large sample) are conservative when dealing with nausea, but very happy to take away the heartburn.
If you’re taking a double dose, even though it’s cheap, it will cost a lot by the end. And if you have to go to omaprazole you’ll need a prescription.

But I’m also a bit nervous about taking anything in pregnancy without checking with a healthcare professional Blush

My GP wouldn't prescribe me anything for terrible indigestion but did drop the hint about ranitidine being available in shops when he was also telling me that Peptac is just cheap gaviscon (it is- pharmacy over the counter though). Ranitidine is £1.75 a box from the supermarket but I must admit I only took the dose given on the packet.

The pharmacist absolutely would not sell me ranitidine during pregnancy so imagine my surprise at being given a double dose throughout the induction process last week once they'd broken my waters (it's in case you need a c section).

Bear in mind you might have symptoms a few days after baby arrives but some of the prescription meds I've ended up on specifically exclude taking ranitidine with them so I've had to go cold turkey 🙄
