Baby Clothes - September Baby

Have started looking at clothing essentials for my first baby due in September and its a bit confusing what is needed. There are lots of options:

all in one bodysuits (long sleeves/short sleeves/sleeveless usually without legs)
all in one sleepsuits (what I would think of as a babygrow - with long sleeves and long legs, sometimes with open or closed feet/hands)
2 or 3 piece outfits Often matching t-shirt and leggings

If you already have children what does/did your baby wear in the first few months?

If you are planning for your first baby what clothes do you think baby will need?

Does baby wear a bodysuit under the sleepsuit or are the sleepsuits designed to be worn alone?

Basic questions but I cant find a guide online, other than baby usually needs to have one more layer than the parent is wearing and that they overheat easily so layers need to come off when moving between different environments....

I only used long sleeved bodysuits under dungarees/dress/as a t-shirt with leggings. I found the sleeves bunched up under anything else with sleeves

I got fed up of babygrows because of the poppers quickly so mine wore outfits from about 2 months (bodysuit with leggings, dress or dungarees and a cardie) Others dresses their children in babygrows only for much longer its personal choice.

Oh and bodysuit can be used on its own if hot, babygrow on its own if it's warm and babygrow and bodysuit if cooler. Basically baby wears one more layer than you as a general rule

I am expecting dc5 in september

I have bought short sleeve bodysuits, sleepsuits some with feet some without and a couple of cardigans just incase

As byebyefriend says long sleeve body suits are a pain in the arse unless under dungarees etc

Ha I was equally confused OP and had to ask my mum what the different clothes were all for.

Apparently:
Cold - sleeveless/legless bodysuit (“vest”) under sleepsuit (with arms/legs)
Normal - sleepsuit with arms/legs
Quite warm - bodysuit with sleeves
V warm - just vest

She said she found the little outfits a faff and didn’t bother using them.

@Fortheloveofscience - glad im not the only one!

A friend has given me lots of clothes they no longer need, mostly body suits with long or short sleeves so I have ordered a couple of pairs of leggings to wear with them and I know we will receive cardigans as gifts from a few people too.

I preferred babygrows to little outfits, I didn't like elastic around his tummy when he was tiny, and babygrows are baggier. Babygrows also cover feet and socks on a newborn is a pita although sock ons are a lifesaver when they are a bit bigger. Most babygrows now have built in scratch mitts as well which is very handy (they just fold over little hands)

So my DS pretty much spent his first 3-4 months in a short sleeved vest and a babygrow, no differentiation between day or night either just always soft and comfy. I also found little cardigans useful for layering when going out DS was born in January so it was cold but he always overheated in snowsuit type things which was a shame as loads of people bought them for us. He was much happier with little cardigans and lots of baby blanket layers when out and about. I have an awesome grandmother though who kept him very well supplied in beautiful hand knitted blankets which were perfect.

In the first few weeks I'd go with short sleeved body suits (vests!) under a babygrow, or long or short sleeved vests with leggings and maybe a cardigan if it's colder. You'll soon get the hang of it!

My little boy lived in vests (short sleeved bodysuits you might say) and sleepsuits (babygrows) until at least 6 months old. I'm due another little boy in November and will be dressing him the same way.

My daughter was born end of October but weather was quite mild. When cooler she wore short sleeved bodysuits and a sleepsuit but when it was warmer she wore long sleeved bodysuits with a pair of socks. I started putting her in very soft leggings, the ones with built in feet covers, at about three months but most of the time she had sleepsuits on. The long sleeved bodysuits do come in handy under dresses and dungarees instead of t shirts

Mine are both early October babies. They wore short sleeved vests (with poppers) underneath babygros. If it was cold
I’d pop a cardigan on top and also socks over the feet bits of the babygros. When going outside I preferred to layer blankets on them in the pram rather than a snowsuit as it is easier to remove blankets if you’re in and out of shops, cafes, etc.

I didn’t use outfits until they were much older, I found them a faff and the tops would ride up.

Both of my babies wore sleepsuits (with either a long or short sleeved bodysuit underneath depending on the weather) for pretty much the entire first year of their lives!

Another vote for short sleeved body suit/vest underneath and babygrow with feet on top. Day and night, till dressing baby was slightly less like wrestling with a screechy octopus.

I had a September baby once, she wore a short sleeve body suit (vest) and a sleepsuit (babygrow) together most of the time. If it was chilly a cardigan on top, if it was warm (we had a couple of record days in the October) just the sleepsuit.

We had a couple of sets from mothercare that were long sleeve tops and leggings (with and without feet) and she wore those with a vest and cardigan.

Congratulations Flowers

Marmite27 · 28/06/2019 21:32

Oh and if really hot - just the vest!
