Midwife appointments before 12 weeks

So I called doctors surgery and they said I need two midwife appointments before 12 weeks. I've got one at 9 and one at 11 weeks booked. What exactly happens at these and do I bring DH?

I've not heard this before, I had one booking in appointment before 12 weeks where they do all the paperwork and ask all the general health and history questions, they also take blood at booking in now, and urine sample. My next one now isn't till 16 weeks

tisonlymeagain · 24/06/2019 14:45

Not sure! I've had my booking appointment at 7 weeks but won't see a midwife again now until 16 weeks. I went alone to my appointment, they like to ask questions to women on their own about their safety, domestic violence etc

FairyDust92 · 24/06/2019 15:16

I only had one about 10 weeks. My partner has come to all of my appointments 😊 if they wanted to ask about DV etc they would find a way of asking. I've never been asked it tbh and there were times when it was just me and my midwife doing weight/height etc. But I know all midwives ask different questions :)

Teddybear45 · 24/06/2019 15:23

Only had one at 10 weeks. Then 12 week scan. DH came to all my appointments too.

StealthPolarBear · 24/06/2019 15:24

Ideally they should be before eleven weeks

I had appts at 8 weeks and 16 weeks with the midwife. I also saw the dr at 12 weeks for a heart and lung check, which the doctor said were old fashioned and needed phasing out. But I wanted to ask about some other things anyway, so am glad I went.

I know some areas are different and have different approaches. I've heard before say that they've had two appointments before. One that is more general - what you can & can't eat etc. The other for taking history/bloods etc. I've even heard of the the first appointment being a group one!

Mine was all together and over an hour long. Here's what you can expect generally:

DH can come to all appts but he needs to be prepared they're boring! My DH comes if he's working at home that day because he likes to feel involved.

I had 2 this time around, the first one was booking in appt but it was with a maternity care assistant. She took my weight, bp, urine, bloods and logged me onto the system. Then when I went back for the 2nd one it was with a midwife who was able to tell me the results from the blood test, went through all the previous history on my notes etc. No idea why I had 2 appts, seemed like a waste of time to me when the midwife could have just done it all in one!

crosser62 · 24/06/2019 15:58

Oh wow, our midwife service does not have anything o do with you until after 12 weeks in this area.
I had bloods, urine and a general health and lifestyle questionnaire.
Think it took about 30 minutes all together, quite the disappointment really.
Not sure what I was expecting 😃

babysharkah · 24/06/2019 16:02

Don't bring dh, he will be sent out of the room while you answer dv questions, totally understandable if you are in that situation. If not you may as well go alone.

Spam88 · 24/06/2019 16:04

The booking appointment is split in two here, so maybe it's the same where you are. First appointment they measure height and weight, blood pressure, carbon monoxide, give advice about vitamins and diet, ask some details about major medical/family history issues. Then we get sent away with lots of forms to complete, and the second appointment they just check through those in case there's anything that indicates you're high risk, complete a safe guarding form and your scan referral. Bloods don't happen here until after the dating scan but i think that's quite unusual.

PineappleTits · 24/06/2019 16:08

I had my booking app at 6+5 and received my scan letter from my maternity hospital two days later. My ultrasound will be when I'm 12+2 (nuchal screening) and I won't see my midwife until 16weeks at my doctors surgery on her one day a week there.

Megan2018 · 24/06/2019 16:13

I had to see GP before midwife at 5+1 and my booking in was at 6+1- definitely didn't need DH for that.

Scan at 12+1

Booking in was 2hrs of form filling, bloods and urine, very dull!

PopWentTheWeasel · 24/06/2019 16:18

Your DH may not be sent out of the room re: questions on domestic violence. At our surgery, the scales and height measuring bar are deliberately in a different room to the one the midwife uses (she generally takes bathroom scales in for appointments) so she can escort you next door to be weighed and measured and asked about domestic violence at the same time.

BowiesJumper · 24/06/2019 16:49

Your DH only really needs to go for the scans - booking in (pre 12 wk appointment) is, as others have said, form filling and bloods etc. V long and boring! Not sure what your second "pre 12 wk" appointment is as we don't have that in this area.

stucknoue · 24/06/2019 16:54

I had mine 12 weeks back when I had my dd, partners if there waited outside as dv, coercive control etc were asked about

TerriB1984 · 24/06/2019 17:05

Yes it’s 2 where I live. As you self refer to midwives here the first appointment is literally just to get you in the system. This will be whenever you contact them to make an appointment. Usually whenever you first find out you’re pregnant. They take weight/height measurements and give you your maternity notes book. Appointment lasts about 10 minutes. The official ‘booking in’ appointment is then somewhere around 9-10 weeks where they take blood and urine samples and go through your history etc to fill out your notes. This appointment usually lasts about an hour. Totally up to you whether or not to have DH there but isn’t really necessary. Fathers are only entitled to time off for 2 appointments and most people use these for the 2 scans.

1 before 12 weeks and one at 16nweeks here.
Mines booked at 9.2 al

HereForAdvice2019 · 24/06/2019 17:27

Thinking about it. I had a phone call triage one. They take basic weight height lmp 35x and book u in.

gamerchick · 24/06/2019 17:29

You don't need your bloke there for booking in. It's just all form filling.

Savvysaz · 24/06/2019 18:10
