What can I eat /drink as a pick-me-up while pg?

I'm v early in my pregnancy and still getting to grips with what I'm meant to be eating/avoiding.

I seem to be having many more energy slumps that I used to (I'm avoiding caffeine) and I also occasionally used to take some effervescent vit C for a "pickmeup".

What's good for quick energy (that's not food)?
I've had the occasional banana but I'm thinking the equivalent of a nice cup of coffee or similar.

TIA

I used to go for banana and milk smoothies. Lots of potassium to avoid leg cramps, calcium and slow burn carbs (and yummy too).

FrannyandZooey · 25/07/2007 22:42

I have been using Kiki superfood supplement and thoguh expensive it is fabulous and definitely gives an energy burst.

Floradix is brilliant if you're flagging. It's the best way to digest iron and it doesn't constipate you. You get it in the chemist. Quite expensive, but I found it fantastic to boost energy in pregnancy.

Probably not terribly good for you but the only thing that would get me off the sofa to make dinner when I was going through a couple of 'so tired I could cry' phases was Lucozade! (Could have just stayed on the sofa but was also REALLY hungry!)

Or a guarana drink or buzz gum (containing guarana). I don't know how readily available they are but the we have a guarana bar in Brighton which does great smoothies.

I drank lots of horlicks. Can't stand it now!

Why is everyone avoiding caffeine? I know some people recommend cutting it out entirely, but there's no evidence against moderate consumption. I am chugging along happily with my tea and an occasional single-shot cappucino.

I would try a fruit smoothy or if it is really bad...ask your mid-wife or doc about vitamin B supplements. Vitamin B does wonder for energy.

The good thing is, your energy will be back soon.

I havent cut out caffiene. Have my morning cup of tea every morning! But at night I have been drinking ovaltine and have some nice green and blacks hot chocolate for when I really need a pick me up. If you make them with milk, helps your calcium intake too!

Jojay · 26/07/2007 08:38

CHOCOLATE!!!!

violeta · 26/07/2007 11:30

I've cut down on the caffeine to about a cup a day, but I find that I really need it just after lunch (at work when I can't just lope off and have a siesta!). Just a half cup seems to do it, and I don't fancy any more than that anyway.

I agree with those who've said smoothies as well. The 'Innocent' ones are lovely.

MrsBadger · 26/07/2007 11:33

I too save my caffeine for when I really need it - no more than 3 cups a day.

Smoothies or really expensive freshly-squeezed juice from M&S are good for a sugar hit whilst feeling virtuous about vitamins.

Spatone iron sachets really helped me in late pregnancy when I felt exhausted - can be bought from Boots/Holland and Barrett. Don't constipate unlike a lot of iron supplements.

EscapeFrom · 27/07/2007 10:50

If you don't want the coffee, have a cup of tea. Less caffeine and very refreshing.

Anonymama · 27/07/2007 18:44

Or have jam doughnuts, crisps, and coke.

Occasionally

newgirl · 27/07/2007 20:44

green tea with mint in it? refreshing but not high on caffiene

spa tone

but in all honesty i survived my pregnancies on fruit cake!

sarah985 · 27/07/2007 22:08

I've been feeling really tired too (27 weeks pregnant) and so midwife prescribed me Spatone (iron). They're great as you just add them to orange juice and don't have the usual side effects like constipation.

Thats the healthy stuff out of the way - in between I head for the jaffa cakes and a cup of tea!

superloopy · 30/07/2007 03:36

Well at the moment I don't give a damn... if it fits in my mouth I will eat it!! Especially if I'm feeling tired, awake, lazy, active, busy, slack...
I am sure I will suffer the consequences after the birth but I will deal with my arse then!!

Tesco has bags of frozen smoothie fruit in ready to whizz bags. In my local store they have the strawberry / banana and tropical fruit / banana combos which I would make up using apple juice and sometimes a yoghurt. You can also get bags of frozen summer fruits which you can add to a fresh banana. I would make up a pint or so of the stuff and drink it when I fancied during the day.

Don't forget things like ovaltine / horlicks. Might seem strange having them in the middle of the day at first, but they can be made either with milk or water dependent on variety and I think one of them is fortified with extra vitamins and minerals.

Anonymama · 30/07/2007 15:43

This morning had porridge & toast. For elevenses at a brownie and a coffee. Have just had salmon sandwich for lunch, and then cheese and ham toastie for afternoon snack...

Having spent the first three months feeling queasy and/or puking, appetite on overdrive.

Thanks for the fruit smoothie tip vole ;)

When pg with DS in 2002 and DD last year generally went for:

Cereal bars
Smoothies
Chocolate
(went off tea and coffee BTW)
Cheese sandwiches
Breadsticks (Aldi salted twists were my faves)

Also make sure you drink plenty of water as staying hydrated is supposed to stave off the tiredness.

Would also recommend you stock up on all the above for the early weeks with your newborn, when meal prep is out of the question and you go through another phase of being really knackered!
