Would I receive extra care when pregnant as I was a prem baby?

Hi all,
Not pregnant yet, but hoping to be soon.
I just have question about my care when I am pregnant.
I was born at 26 weeks weighing 1lb 6 oz, the doctors could not find a reason why I was born so early. My mum didn’t have any more children so did not know if this was a one off or something to do with her.
I was just wondering whether I would be kept an extra eye on during my pregnancy as I was born so early incase it was a genetic thing (?) or something?
Any experiences/ opinions would be very much appreciated 😊

I'm not aware of it being a question that gets asked.

It's only monitored if you've had a preterm birth, your mother giving birth early is unlikely to affect you.

I discussed it in my first pregnancy as DH was born at 25 weeks and my brother was born at 30 weeks and the midwife said it isn't a risk factor.

Don’t think your early birth will have any bearing on your pregnancy. Guess you will have regular checks and if anything becomes apparent they will address it at the time.
All I can add is I was diagnosed with an chronic issue when pregnant and had to see docs every week from then on - was monitored well, so I’m sure if there is an issue you will be taken care of.

I was born very premature and didn't have any extra monitoring when pregnant. It's not even a question that they ask during your antenatal care, so presumably is not a risk factor for premature labour yourself.

I was however prepared from 7 months onwards, with all my baby things ready, but my daughter was born 2.5 weeks late!

They don’t ask or care if you were premature but do if the reason for that prematurity was preclampsia / diabetes / clotting disorders / rhesus disease. Things like the early breaking of waters has risk factors associated with age and weight rather than genetic causes. There is better monitoring offered now than even a few years ago, so you shouldn’t worry. Most causes of premature birth can be identified provided you let the mw know when something doesn’t feel right.

They don't seem to see it as genetic but all these questions you'd just ask your midwife:)

I was a perm baby, it wasn't asked about and my DS was 2 weeks late.

I was a 28 weeker due to my mums pre eclampsia. I mentioned it because I was worried but they just did routine checks. I went to 40+5 and had a smooth homebirth as a first time mum.

I'd mention it if it worries you but your mum's pregnancy is not yours and I hope you will have a lovely smooth ride. It's very weird getting past the gestation you were born at! All the best OP x

I was born at 24 weeks and raised this with my MW she wasn't concerned and said it wasn't hereditary I am now 40 + 4 and was convinced I would have the baby early but that obviously hasn't happened so I wouldn't worry if I was you Smile

Buddytheelf85 · 25/06/2019 10:49

I think it depends on the reason for the premature birth. I raised this with my midwife as I was premature due to a placental abruption. She said they weren’t concerned about that as there’s no proven genetic link with placental abruption, but that if the reason for the premature birth had been something that does have a proven genetic link (eg pre-eclampsia, GD) then that would be something they’d monitor closely for.

I wouldn't have thought so, no one knows exactly when a baby will arrive only when its expected to arrive.
