Overweight and pregnant, can I still loose weight?

I’m 5’8 and around 14 stone mark, I’m 6/7 weeks pregnant and just feeling so sick of being overweight! Can’t get comfortable even when sleeping/sitting, just generally feel physically sick, I’ve been eating better as I’ve had no appetite, I have PCOS and carry all my weight around middle area, I just want to be healthy and have more energy when baby is here, I will obviously seek advise from midwife and gp but wondered if anyone has been in similar situation and purposely ended up being lighter at the end out pregnancy?

Speak to your midwife about going to slimming World. She'll need to sign something to give to the group leader for you to attend when pregnant. Go for it!

Thanks @cuppa12345 I have heard good things about slimming world so will give that a mention to my midwife Smile

I lost weight during both my pregnancies. Combination of first trimester nausea and then as I’m quite short during the third trimester it felt like the baby was squashing my stomach and I couldn’t physically eat as much without feeling sick.

I was sent to a healthy living midwife which also helped me get into the mindset that you don’t need to eat for two and the additional calories you need at the end of pregnancy equate to something like a slice of white bread.

Yep, with DS1 I ended up slimmer the day after giving birth than when I got pregnant! I was lucky that I didn’t get nausea or cravings and was really into salads and healthy food. I did a couple of youtube pregnancy workouts every day and that plus the energy it takes to grow a human worked wonders! Plus stayed off the chocolate thanks to heartburn and the crippling fear of gestational diabetes.
Second DS was a different story as I was running on sugar to keep DS1 entertained while I was pregnant, and didn’t have as much time for exercise 😄 still trying to get the weight off now 19 months later but still, not the end of the world 😊 good luck!

Oh just FYI, I bloody put it back on, especially after dd1 as afterwards I lived off chocolate digestives!

Here’s me at 6 months pregnant (mostly just fat still, no real bump) and a week after giving birth.

I'm a very similar build (5.10, 14 and a half stone before I was pregnant, size 14/16). I also carry a lot of my weight on my stomach. I lost quite a bit of weight in the first 2 trimesters through a decreased appetite. It's only the third tri that the weight has piled on, but my midwife is happy with it as it's feeding stores for when breastfeeding. There were never any concerns with my weight (BMI was 29.4 at booking in) and I've had a straightforward pregnancy (touch wood). Tbh I wouldn't have managed doing slimming world for the first tri, but have kept up with walking/yoga/swimming to manage the weight.

If you want to make an active effort to lose weight speak to your midwife as she can refer you to slimming world classes.

@BendydickCuminsnatch thanks! I’ve been looking at doing some pregnancy workouts! It’s amazing how much pregnancy’s can differ, I just craved bad foods with my first so hopefully my second will be different!

@xsharonneedlesx thanks, you can defo see a difference! Can’t believe that’s one week after birth! I’m feeling all squashed now so dread to think what I’d be like in third trimester if I keep gaining!

@Capybaras thanks for sharing, my bmi is similar and tipping towards that 30 which I really don’t want! Swimming sounds fun! Definitely sounds like something I could stick to, all the best with the rest of your third trimester! Smile

With pcos you may lose weight by replacing refined carbs with complex carbs. Also suggest adding plenty of fish / nuts / veg (including raw veg) to your diet.

Following with interest!

I’m so sick of being overweight anyway. I gained 5 stone with my first pregnancy (awful nausea which meant I lived off chips and pasta and could hardly exercise). Despite working out and exclusively breastfeeding, I had only managed to lose 3 stone by the start of this pregnancy.

So far I have only gained 3lbs at 21 weeks, but I know from experience that I gain a LOT from this point onwards. For various reasons (childcare, work and an injury) I’m not going to be able to workout/swim as much as I would like, so I’m trying to be much more disciplined about what I eat. I’m going to try and eat a lot more veggies, salads and cook more vegan recipes. I would be delighted if I could keep my weight gain down to just a stone or something.
