I am devastated to discover that my much longed for pregnancy is ectopic. I have been given the option of either having a metheltrexate injection or surgery to remove the left fallopian tube. I want to try and conceive again but what would give me the best chance?

I'm sorry you're facing this.
I wasnt given the option - only surgery. But I've just tucked one child into bed, and the other is reading on the floor infront of me. Both conceived with just the one tube.
The Ectopic Pregnancy Trust has some great info and chat boards.
Whatever you decide, I wish you an easy recovery, and a sticky bean in the right place soon Flowers

Have a chat to your medical team. With surgery you likely lose a tube but with methotrexate you will have to take a break from ttc. Neither are good options, it's just which is less bad for you. I'd be tempted to keep the tube if it were me but everyone is different.

Angelinthenightx · 21/06/2019 20:42

Aww im so sorry,i agree with the last comment go with what the medical team advise.x

I had an ectopic in 2016 and had methotrexate and I’m so glad I didn’t lose a tube. I then had to wait to conceive for 3 months and now have a healthy 22 month old and I ovulated the same side so I know my tube is still healthy. I had to go to the hospital to check my hcg levels and it took 2 weeks to get to zero. Good luck with whatever you decide

Sooverthemill · 21/06/2019 21:48

So sorry you are having to go through this. I haven't had an ectopic pregnancy but I've had to make other hard pregnancy related decisions and I asked what would you advise your wife to do? Obviously I had male obstetricians. That helped me think through best options. Good luck

EightWellies · 21/06/2019 21:56

I would say go for the injection, for keeping your tube. I'm so sorry you're going through this Flowers

WhoWants2Know · 21/06/2019 22:06

I'm another who had an ectopic, kept the tube and have 2 lovely kids.

But even if you lose a tube, apparently the other tube can manage to catch an egg from either ovary! Bodies are incredible in their ability to adapt.

DullPortraits · 21/06/2019 22:07

I had the methotrexate injection. Believe me its not the easy option but the better option to surgery. It took my levels 2 weeks to reach zero and in that time you are still at risk of rupture. The pain was horrible and I vomited almost daily. The injection made me so poorly but i evaded GA and kept my tube.

Have you decided what you are going to do? Like someone else said, your tubes are clever and just because you ovulate from one side doesn’t mean it was that tube that it went down. Either tube can pick the egg up so if you do lose one the other tube can pick up from both ovaries.

stresshead84 · 22/06/2019 09:10

I didn’t have a choice. My tube ruptured while a was waiting for surgery.

But I’ve got 2 dc despite only having one tube. I was told at the time I might need IVF in future but both were conceived naturally, no intervention. I was also told the remaining ovary without the tube can still release an egg and it can be ‘caught’ by the other tube. I didn’t believe a word of it. I had an early scan with DS1 which showed the egg cane from the side with no tube. Miracles do happen!

It’s a really dark place at the time, it takes time to get over but there is light and hope. Best wishes OP.

Hi, I don’t know if you have already chosen but I wanted to share my experience. My second pregnancy was an ectopic. It was detected at about 6 weeks. I tried the injection as I was hoping to keep my tube. Unfortunately, despite the methotrexate injection, the ectopic continued to grow and I was then given surgery to remove the tube at about 8 weeks.
I was worried about future fertility but, to reassure you, after the methotrexate waiting period, I became pregnant very quickly and had a healthy boy. He came from the left ovary but was picked up by the right tube. This can happen. I have since had two further successful pregnancies. All three following the ectopic have been scanned at 5-6 weeks to check location and all were fine.
Have you asked your consultant about the future health of your tube? Mine was concerned that, even after the injection, the tube could be damaged and increase the likelihood of a repeat ectopic.
I am so sorry that you are going through this Flowers

Banana1984 · 22/06/2019 10:22

@LauraG7782 I think I will go for the injection but I will ask about the risk of this happening again should I keep the tube. Both options are awful I guess but the only choices. Spend the whole night in tears wondering why me but I feel somewhat better reading how you have all gone on to have successful pregnancies thanks for all your responses. X

Flowers I’m so sorry OP.
It feels like winning some awful lottery. Sad
There is so much hope for further, successful pregnancies. Take your time to grieve x

Hi, what has happened?

LauraG7782 · 25/06/2019 18:07

You will be ok I promise. I had one day that I had some pain but it will get better I promise. The panic is that the baby will keep growing but it will stop. When did you have the injection and have you had your levels checked xx

LauraG7782 · 25/06/2019 18:08

I have just had a miscarriage too so I am feeling the hurt of loosing another one. Just remember you can try again. These things happen for a reason. Xx

Gustavo1 · 25/06/2019 18:21

Banana how are you? Did you have the injection? I don’t even know to phrase a question about how things are now. I know first hand that everything feels wrong and almost distasteful. You’ll be ok. If will take time but you will be ok Flowers

Gustavo1 · 25/06/2019 18:22

@LauraG7782, I’m so sorry about your miscarriage too Flowers

LauraG7782 · 25/06/2019 18:52

Thank you Gustavo1. I’m ok about it now and just want it to be finished so I can try again. I’ve got 2 amazing boys so I know I can have children. I suffered an ectopic between them and now a miscarriage so it’s like I have to have a bad experience to have a good one x
