Sickness during glucose tolerance test

I was meant to have my GTT yesterday (I'm 25+5); went to the hospital for a 7:30 appointment after fasting from 8pm the night before. Had my bloods taken, drank the glucose drink (and didn't find it that bad); waited an hour, second set of bloods... 15 minutes later I was sick.

Really annoyed with myself - the nurses were very sweet, took my blood again and said they might still be able to get the information they need. Has anyone else had this happen to them? Did you have to re-take the test?

Not able to answer your question but I had my GTT test last week and had to wait 2 hours for 2nd blood test ?

Why are you annoyed at yourself, it can't be helped.
I had to wait 2 hours between mine too. Could it have been the sudden spike in blood sugar after being empty for so long maybe.

Annoyed because I’ve seen a lot online about most people feeling sick during it... but not actually being. I’ve not been very sicky even during first trimester.

Not sure why mine was after one hour - the process was supposed to be blood taken, drink, wait an hour, blood taken, wait an hour, blood taken - so it should have been two hours but with an interim blood sample in the middle. I guess to measure change over time?

I was sick at one of mine and had to have the test redone as said that they can't carry on but I had awful sickness all through my pregnancy's

DeadDoorpost · 21/06/2019 18:51

I was told at mine that I'd have to do it another time if I was sick... thankfully I wasn't but there was a high chance I could have been as I have Hyperemesis. I was also told to Let them know if I was feeling sick so I could lay down.

Hopefully you'll be fine and won't have to redo it.

I had to do 3 GTTs in the past 6 months due to inconclusive results (fml). The only time I felt queasy was when my blood sugar spiked over 12mmol/215mg so feeling/being sick may be an indicator that there are problems. Most people spike in the first hour, though some may peak during the second hour. Alternatively you may have had “reactive hypoglycemia” where the blood sugar crashes too quickly (I usually feel extremely sleepy when coming down from the sugar). I think most doctors will recommend repeating the test despite sickness as they need all three numbers to make a diagnosis.

The alternative to not repeating GTT would be to treat yourself as if you have GD. This involves getting a testing kit and doing fingerpricks 4 times a day (1x fasting and 3x after meals). Keep a diary for 2 weeks and see if your glucose levels are within target range (below 5/90 fasting and 6.7/120 two hours after a meal). It‘s bit of a hassle and insurance won’t cover the cost of equipment without a formal diagnosis, but at least you‘re spared the discomfort of another glucose drink and potentially being sick again.

@GivenchyDahhling

This exact thing happened to me at the 3-hour test. I even threw up 15 minutes after the second blood taking, just like you!

I think I cried because I was so disappointed about having to do the 3-day diet, get up at the crack of dawn to go to the hospital (I work evenings) and drink so much sugar all for nothing.

I live abroad but I'm pretty sure it's the same in the UK from what I read. They made me an appt with the endocrine and she gave me the choice of re-doing the test or pricking my finger 6 times a day, every other day for a month to measure my blood sugar levels. I chose the second option and the results showed that I didn't have gestational diabetes.

I was told to continue doing that once a week until I see her next in a few months. That means I won't ever have to re-do the GTT test (I did the first one at about 9 weeks, I think).

They'll probably offer you the same options. Good luck!
