Hi
I'm a bit nervous to post here. I've just found out I'm pregnant, the doctor has confirmed it etc. I went to the hospital as they thought it might be ectopic but wasn't. I'm only about 2 months gone, I'm 22 years old and I was only seeing somebody, this person is supportive but he's 19.
I work full time, over 36 hours a week. I live in a shared house, as does he.
Does anyone know if I'm entitled to any help from the council seeing as I'm pregnant but work full time, I just can't afford it all and the person is looking for work
Thank you x

Hi 😊 where abouts are you?
Make an appointment with your local council housing with a housing officer and enquire what help you're entitled to. I'd explain that you are not in a relationship and need accommodation for yourself and your baby for safety and security. If you're a single parent you'll likely be given help towards rent and council tax, as well as a grant from energy providers.

Do a benefit assessment online to see what you are entitled too, it's surprising the amount sometimes. Take care x

I know with my council if you're pregnant you're entitled to go onto the housing list with no problems. Go to citizens advice also x

Anyone can ask to go on the housing list as long as they don't own a property. But being on the list doesn't mean you will be offered anything. You need to consider how much you earn, what the prevailing rents where you live are and see online if you are entitled to housing benefit. You are under 35 so the rate of benefits until you become a mother is the lowest (i think you can claim the higher rate for a one bed flat once you are at a certain stage, you are only entitled to a one bed housing allowance until baby is one). There are parts of the country where council housing is easier to come by but in most places the private sector is all you can hope for, and you won't be high priority because you are not homeless, you simply live in a shared house which many do including families. If your landlord chooses to evict you because you are pregnant then the council will need to help you find housing but it doesn't mean a council house.
