Pregnancy weight gain

Hi all,

At my booking appointment my weight was measured at 60kg and I'm now 33 weeks pregnant and I weigh 71.7 kg. I calculate this to be a weight gain of about 1.8 stones.

When I've checked the NHS guidance it states 10kg and 12.5kg should be gained during pregnancy. This is worrying me

I've not been overly active (I do still do some walking and quite active at weekends) but I don't feel like I've gained that much weight. I am panicking that I've only got 0.7 of a kg I can potentially gain (before ? gaining too much according to the NHS?!)

Should I be worried?

Many thanks in advance,
Nat

www.calculator.net/pregnancy-weight-gain-calculator.html

This is a brilliant calculator as it plots a weekly expected weight as well as cumulative gain for entire pregnancy based on your pre pregnancy weight and height. It says I should have gained 14.6-24.7lb by now (25 weeks with twins) and I’m plum in the middle of that range.

That’s not a huge weight though. I think people used to say it’s ok to gain heaps of weight and now it’s gone completely in the other direction saying you don’t need many extra calories and not to gain much at all. If you don’t feel like it’s too much I think it’s fine. I’m a little bit nervous myself because I’m 15 weeks and have already put on 6kg but I was on the underweight side before getting pregnant so I’m trying not to worry about it. Also I’ve read a lot of people don’t put on much more from around 33 weeks because you start to feel too uncomfortable and full to eat that much so you might not put much more on. Eat what you want so long as it’s not too much unhealthy stuff because the baby needs it.

I think you're fine. By 33 weeks I'd put on 2.5 stone, which is above the recommended for full term, but my midwife said it was normal as I started out underweight. Don't worry so much about weight gain, especially since you're still in the normal recommended range. Everyone gains differently.

@Rememberallball - thank you. That’s really useful :)

@Imtootired - thanks for your help. I’ve read that if you were under weight at the start that you do need to put more weight on, so if it’s any consolation I wouldn’t worry if I was in your position. I’m guessing some weeks people gain more than others or less than. I’m trying to eat healthily but I do have a penchant for chocolate 😂

@purplemama1990 - thank you. It just worried me because it didn’t seem like a big range for the NHS but other sites allow for more weight gain :/

It sounds like your weight was comfortably in the ‘healthy’ BMI range to start with so I wouldn’t worry if you gain a little more than recommended during the pregnancy. It won’t do any harm, but obviously if you want to get back to pre-pregnancy weight it will take a bit more work and is more weight than you ‘need’ to gain. The guidelines are much more important if you’re large or high risk diabetes etc to start with.
I’ve certainly gained a few kg more than strictly necessary but BMI was 20 to start with and enjoying food now morning sickness is gone Cake

I've put on 3.5 stone, I'm the heaviest I've ever been. I'm not fussing as I'm measuring fine and the pregnancy has been relatively smooth. Having a summer baby means that, weather dependant, I can get out and about for walks. I'm not letting it stress me 😎

ohdearymemumof3 · 19/06/2019 17:49

I gained 2 stone with both my children and now im 13 weeks pregnant with #3 hoping not to put another 2 stone on haha.. i was a size 8 before my first, 2 children later and im now a size 14 🙄

motherofcats81 · 20/06/2019 01:19

I've put on 1.5 stone at 17 weeks! But I'd put that on by booking appt and I haven't gone up at all since then even though bump has got bigger obviously. So I'm hoping I'm just evening out now. I've read a lot that says you shouldn't worry too much about the charts etc, every woman is different. I know someone that put on 5 stone and lost it all within 6 months after!

The nhs weight calculator has never actually met you personally. It doesn't know you or your body. Everyone is different.

In my completely healthy pregnancy I put on 3 stone (9 to 12 stone) and nhs midwives agreed it was completely normal and healthy.

6 months post partum I was back at 9 stone.

I now have a happy 10 month old ds who has been completely fine since birth.

Don't worry about how much weight you're gaining and try to enjoy your pregnancy Smile

I'm 36wks and I've put on 14kgBlush I don't think I'm eating very differently, besides the odd treat, my body just seems to want to make fat right now!

People seem to say pregnancy weight is easier to lose. I guess we'll see!

DancingUnicorn1 · 21/06/2019 07:57

I lost 12lbs in the first trimester and I've only gained 4 back at 25 weeks pregnant. So still around 8lbs down.
People keep telling me my bump looks small, but all scans, etc have been fine.
I think as long as baby is doing well it doesn't matter too much.

Triskaidekaphilia · 21/06/2019 11:37

I'm 35 weeks and gained 18kg. I was on a high protein diet and weight training before I was pregnant but have found that hard with food aversions (went off meat, eggs and most veg early on!) morning sickness, exhaustion, and now pgp. I reckon half of it was unavoidable and half of it was me overindulging my cravings and being lazy. Baby is large but seems to be healthy so I'm just going to do my best to get back to good habits after pregnancy. I've finished work (active job) so I need to try and keep active for these last few weeks!
