Bicornuate Uterus

Hi this is my first post so I’ll just put it out there. I’m pregnant with my second child, my first child is nearly 8. I had some early bleeding so went down for a scan yesterday and they said I’m about 5weeks+4 and they can still see the pregnancy, but apparently I have a bicornuate uterus. I’m unsure as to how because all of my other scans have never picked this up before. Has anyone experienced this and if so was the pregnancy all ok? I’d appreciate any help, advice or anything from anyone. Thank you Smile

Hi, Yes, I have! It was only on my 4th pregnancy that it got picked up. I went for an early reassurance scan at 8 weeks as my previous was a MMC (unrelated to BU) and wanted to ensure it hadn't happened again. I was told that the baby had not implanted in either horn but instead in the centre so couldn't tell me if the pregnancy would continue. recently had my 12 week scan and baby is there and very active indeed. I mentioned my BU at my 12 weeks scan and she says that at this stage it's hard to detect as my uterus has expanded (thus never being identified previously).
I purposely didn't mention my BU at my 12 week until the end as I was curious at to whether it would be picked up.
I have been referred to the consultant because I have a Bicornuate uterus however I'm really not worried in the slightest as I've had 2 full term babies with no issues.

Was your first child full term? X

These messages are so reassuring!

I had an early scan at 8 weeks and they told me I might have a bicornated uterus. Obviously I googled and it's all scary stuff.

12 week scan is Friday so I hope to get a bit more info then.

I have a mild BU, had early scans with bleeding and thats when they spotted it at 8 weeks, i'm currently 15 weeks now and everything seems to be okay!

Tel1991 · 18/06/2019 20:34

Ahh that is very reassuring. Yes my first child was born full term with absolutely no complications at all. I hope everything continues to go well for you

I have one, I won't go in to details because I fall into the category of not smooth sailing pregnancies and I don't want to scare anyone when it isn't likely to happen to them. (I do have two beautiful children though)

However I will say, it is important to make sure you get the right care, support and monitoring during your pregnancy. I've found some healthcare professionals don't really know anything about it and just ignore it. Make sure you're noted as high risk and consultant led. Best of luck and long, healthy pregnancies to everybody.

My bicornuate uterus was picked up during my second pregnancy too. My first pregnancy was fine and my second was too.

LuLuLuLuLooooo · 19/06/2019 07:40

Juniper is there anything you with you had known or asked at the start of the process?

Tel1991 · 19/06/2019 07:59

Without going into too much detail lol the ladies that had the bleed was it more of just a spotting with pinkish blood or did anyone of you have like bright red blood with small clots?

I have one and on it’s own it doesnt put you in a high risk category for pregnancy. I have 3 children but also 4 mc - dk if related or not. I also had a retained placenta which I believe is more likely. Hope all goes well.

JuniperNarni · 19/06/2019 08:40

@LuLuLuLuLooooo yes, it was picked up on an early pregnancy scan and I asked every single person I came into contact with. One person said it might cause me some issues, the rest said that it would be absolutely fine, I just may need a c section because babies can often be breech.

I was left as low risk, my baby was early and they didn't believe I was in labour. From what I found on google there are lots of worrying things but a massive, massive majority of women never seem to have any issues at all when i've spoken to them. They all have full term, normal labours and pregnancies. So the good news is, that will probably happen but during this pregnancy, I have growth and cervical length scans every two weeks and I'd rather have extra checks for nothing than not have any and something does happen if that makes sense. I'd request to be consultant led when you see your midwife if you have a bicornuate uterus.

It's also worth noting that there are many varying degrees of bicornuate uterus, mine is really severe, if it isn't then you're unlikely to have any problems. But from what I can gather they find it hard to tell when you're already pregnant.

I'm sorry for all the rambling and like I said I didn't want to scare anyone and I don't think i'm doing a great job here but i'd rather women get the extra support than not like I did with my first.

Tel1991 · 19/06/2019 16:59

@JuniperNarni I hope everything goes okay with this pregnancy for you. And I completely understand the precaution of extra checks I’d be the same. I’m at the hospital next Thursday so I’ll ask them about it then. Do you still bleed now? I didn’t have any blood yesterday and then I’ve just been to the toilet and it’s pink again. I just don’t know if I’m going to be one of those people who bleed throughout the pregnancy or when to be worried etc. God being pregnant is actually scary isn’t it!

@Fluffyunicorn98 have you had anymore bleeding since the first time or was it just the once?

Tel i had bleeding from week 5-11 BUT i also had a subchorionic hematoma so i'm unsure of what the bleeding was from sorry i can't give you much more help Thanks

JuniperNarni · 19/06/2019 18:18

@Tel1991 Thankyou, i'm actually an anxious mess this pregnancy.

Good idea to ask about extra monitoring and checks. I haven't actually bled at all with this pregnancy but I did with my daughter, brown, pink and some red in the early stages, which scared the life out of me but no reason was ever found on the scans and she is currently asleep on top of me now Smile they did say it was possibly blood coming from the other horn?

Bleeding can be quite common in early pregnancy I think. I've had two miscarriages before and was told that it was nothing to do with my uterus so I don't think you should worry that your bicornuate uterus makes that any more likely.

Hope it all goes well and a smooth uneventful pregnancy for you from now on
