Leaking waters? Confused!

So, 37+5 today. As I'm in the countdown I'm symptom spotting like crazy but a couple of things have stood out

  • on Sunday I thought I lost a bit - definitely not all - of my mucus plug
  • yesterday about 6pm I noticed I felt a bit like I was sort of leaking. As if my period was starting, almost.
  • this morning woke with period like pains, and a bit of an ache in my lower back.
  • and I'm definitely leaking. Went for a wee, then after I'd got up I felt a lot of liquid come out. It doesn't smell and looks clear, but I'm also crazy hydrated as I always drink about a litre of water at night.

Conscious this might be nothing or could be early labour. Should I call midwife or wait for something more concrete?

I've been told to put a pad on (to catch the fluid so they can check it) and give them a call, in those circumstances. They like to get you going once your waters have gone if you're at term, from what I've gathered, so definitely worth ringing. Exciting!

As above, pad on, phone in. Pop in for a check up. Maybe put the labour bag in the boot.

RMarieClaire · 18/06/2019 07:40

Thanks both! I'll dig a pad out. Oh dear. I've not finished work yet!

Yes I had this the day before I went into labour.. apparently it can be part of your show! Same advice as PPs 😊
Good luck, hopefully won’t be long now!

Sounds like you might be going into labour, phone the hospital, they can check if it is the waters and will probably want to see you if you are 37 weeks

SmellMySmellbow · 18/06/2019 08:02

Sounds like your hindwaters have gone. I had this and would get little gushes after I'd been lying down, but nothing like the giant flood when my forwaters went. If hindwaters break you are at risk of infection so need to go in and be checked then they'll likely book you for induction. They gave you 48 hours to go home and get into labour, which I didn't (just mild contractions) so went in for the induction at 37+2

RMarieClaire · 18/06/2019 08:19

@SmellMySmellbow yes exactly that - little gushes. Enough that I've had to change twice already this morning. I've got an appointment at 3pm to get checked. How long before your full waters broke? Did you have to have an induction?

Exciting but I have not done my nesting so my house is a mess!

Please go in. If it’s your waters - which it sounds like it might well be - you shouldn’t leave it long due to the infection risk. They will want to confirm it’s your waters and the time they started leaking and give you 24 or 48 hours from then, which you might have already hit if it was Sunday.

Cookit · 18/06/2019 08:22

Appointment with the midwife to check?

This happened twice with me (although it was a big gush so nothing to check) and I called the delivery suite and they told me to come in straight away.

SmellMySmellbow · 18/06/2019 08:27

@RMarieClaire my hindwaters went at 37, I went in that afternoon. They booked the induction for 37+2 and sent me home. I bounced on a ball, ate curry, had baths, went for a shuffling walk but at 37+2 I only had mild irregular contractions so went in at 7am for induction. When the midwife examined me she 'accidentally' broke my forewaters, which flooded the table and was far more dramatic. I was about 3cm. I then asked for a chance again to go into natural labour. After 5 hours of much stronger contractions I was examined again but was still 3cm, so they put me on central delivery, gave me an epidural and put me on a drip. It was all perfectly fine and very pleasant and I gave birth at 10pm that evening. Good luck!

Go and get checked! I had a little leak, no pad on and went to the hospital and they were convinced it was nothing even though I was a week overdue. They performed some kind of test.... from vague memory took an internal swab and dipped it and it confirmed it was my waters. The midwife said they had only ever been wrong once before! They gave me 24 hrs to go into labour naturally or an induction as once your waters break there is a risk of infection.
Best of luck xx

Thanks all. I have an appointment at 3pm. Seems a long way off but does mean I can email my boss, get some laundry done and make my playlist.

I'm also having period like pains, which makes me think it's not a false alarm but only time will tell. Amazing and terrifying!

Definitely sounds like labour! Good luck 😁😁😁

IVEgottheDECAF · 18/06/2019 09:41

Ah i think its baby day for you op!

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 18/06/2019 09:44

When it happened to me I had to go in for 48 hours of intravenous AB but I was only 34 weeks and 30 weeks, both babies were born a week later without induction

I’d think they would induce you though at 37 weeks, although the period pains sound like it may be starting on its own

RMarieClaire · 18/06/2019 12:23

@EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall yes they mentioned induction

I'm currently curled in a ball with period style pain - so much for upright and open, ha! - so hoping that won't be necessary. Sending OH on a wild goose chase for a TENS machine! Xx

Today's the day OP!

TokyoSushi · 18/06/2019 12:28

Ooh this is exciting, good luck OP!

Lexyness · 18/06/2019 13:23

Good luck!

I have a different kind of story to everyone else - with dc1&2 my ENTIRE waters didn’t even leak through my trousers! And my entire show was exactly as you described on Sunday - no more than that! (Was 11&12 years ago though so wasn’t monitored in those days like I am being now lol)

Fingers crossed things progress quickly and smoothly for you now xxx
