Pregnant friend - too early for gifts?

Spode999 · 17/06/2019 21:02

My friend is pregnant and her scan is tomorrow. I bought a gift to give her tomorrow (once she tells me everything is alright of course).
I firstly bought a baby record book, but it only does for after the baby is born. I've seen another which is a record for during pregnancy and I was also thinking of a wee soft toy.

Is this weird?? Too soon?? If so, I will hold off. I'm just excited! :)

I thinks it's nice 😁

RedPink · 17/06/2019 21:12

Personally I didn't want any gifts before the baby was born but everyone is different.

Thanks @yellowgreenbluepurple & @RedPink , I appreciate all thoughts/opinions Smile

@Spode999 I think that's so sweet, you sound like an amazing friend and I certainly would love those gifts! Pregnancy can be scary but I can imagine it's so exciting too and something to celebrate!

Pipandmum · 17/06/2019 21:21

Yes but stop there. There will be plenty of time and occasions to give gifts when the baby’s actually born!

Leleophants · 17/06/2019 21:28

Most of my friends have been cautious so it's actually nice to get a few gifts and cards after telling people!

Angelinthenightx · 17/06/2019 21:39

I think its a sweet idea, she is lucky to have u as a friend.x

Justus22 · 17/06/2019 21:41

I think it's a lovely gesture. Some people are funny about gifts before the baby arrives but I only found that out from mums net, my friends would take it for the thoughtful and lovely thing it is. Xx

Sandybval · 17/06/2019 21:43

The pregnancy record book sounds lovely, I wish I had one as I didn't think to and it would be nice to look back on. You know your friend best, I think it sounds lovely and thoughtful.

Thank you so much to everyone for responding :) I appreciate all the advice

I’ve had 2 gifts already (am 24 weeks with twins) - best friend gave me a set of babygros that are gorgeous and gender specific (she’s one of the very few people who know what we’re having) and another friend, who is due to become a grandma around the same time that ours are due, sent me 2 hooded towels which are gorgeous.

I think it’s lovely to have things ready for your friend but be prepared in case she is superstitious about getting stuff early on!!

Maddis136 · 18/06/2019 00:28

You’re clearly a very thoughtful friend. Maybe think about a gift that’s just to make her feel good rather than baby (as there will be so much time for buying cute baby stuff later). I got a lovely ‘mum to be’ hamper from my friend with pampering goodies safe for pregnant ladies and was thrilled.

MrsEG · 18/06/2019 05:40

How lovely are you!! I think it’s very sweet and thoughtful of you - after my sister had her first scan I gave her a little baby grow that said ‘Honorary Bridesmaid’ as she would be pregnant for my wedding and she absolutely loved it. As others say, I didn’t get her anything else then though until her baby shower :)

Wishing56 · 18/06/2019 06:55

When my friend announced she was pregnant I did her a little box with a pregnancy journal, some nice bubble bath, face pack, stretch mark cream, ginger/peppermint teas. I did put a Baby hat in there as couldnt resist something for the baby but everything else was for her. She loved it.

Myfoolishboatisleaning · 18/06/2019 06:56

I would have hated it in case the baby died. But others like it

AnybodysDude · 18/06/2019 06:59

I would get the pregnancy one and give her that, and leave the baby book until the baby is here safely.

I bought little bits for my friend throughout her pregnancy, as did she, and her family. I had to go to her house whilst she was in hospital delivering her stillborn at 40 weeks and move everything into the loft so she wouldn't have to come home to it. When she had her second baby I didn't give her anything until the baby was home, and she didn't accept anything from anyone who tried to give earlier.

I hate to be all doom and gloom but it does happen.

crazycatlady7 · 18/06/2019 07:00

I got my friend a pregnancy journal and she brought me the same. It's a lovely gift and even if something happened I'm glad I have a record of my journey. So it's a great idea 😀

Another friend brought baby a rattle after the scan- again I love it.

Both these friends are mine and my husbands closest friends, but not sure how I would feel if others brought things for the baby before it arrives.

annlee3817 · 18/06/2019 07:13

I had a pregnancy journal that I wrote in each week, including bump pictures and my DD loves it, nice thought :)

EdithWeston · 18/06/2019 07:22

I would give gifts essentially for the baby after the birth (or at a shower if someone hosts one for her, as it's traditional for shower gifts to be for the baby)

Right now, if you want to give something, I'd suggest future-mother toiletries or a voucher for somewhere that sells maternity clothes.

I really didn't want gifts for the babies until they were safely here. It's a fairly common preference.

DannyWallace · 18/06/2019 07:54

Ah that's such a lovely gift. But I feel the same as PP and would probably appreciate it more closer to due date.

Just putting it out there, when I announced I was pregnant my friend made me a wee box of stuff-bubble bath (which is made for pregnant women!), face mask, foot cream, sickness bands etc. It was just all little bits but so so thoughtful x

stucknoue · 18/06/2019 08:09

A couple of things is lovely but don't go over the top, perhaps think of things for her eg stretch mark oil, bubble bath
