Morning sickness is horrendous

So this is my 4th (unplanned) pregnancy and the ms is like nothing I've ever experienced. My first 3 I felt nauseous (slightly more so with my second pregnancy which was a girl) but I am full on vomiting 10-15 times a day. I've been sent home from work early today and am lay on the sofa with zero energy and terrible kidney pain, probably from not keeping enough fluids down. I am only 8 weeks but each day it's getting worse and I am really struggling juggling work and the kids already. I have to take a sick bag when I'm driving the car. Is there anything I can do/try to eat to ease the symptoms. I am dreading the next few weeks.

I feel for you, I was the same when pregnant, my doctor in Spain at the time prescribed Cariban. It didn't stop it completely but I felt so much better and was able to eat and drink a little without being sick. I also found that wearing my husband's travel wristbands helped with car or train journeys. Good luck, try and give yourself a break if possible to get some rest and sleep as I think that will help too (easier said than done I realize!).

justilou1 · 13/06/2019 16:13

Go to Dr... I ended up being prescribed Zofran. Still felt gross but wasn’t puking quite so much. I found sucking on frozen raspberries and blackberries helped. Everyone’s different. I couldn’t look anything sweet in the face. I craved tonic water. Go figure....

Tails5290 · 13/06/2019 16:37

Thanks both, will try calling dr on Monday although I'm sure it'll be a 3 week wait before they can give me an appointment! I'm currently eating toasted seeded bread and drinking lots of water, although it comes back up it's bearable, anything else I eat and throw up tastes so acidic!! I was going to take a week off work but they really need me there next week so that's a no go. I've heard morning sickness is at its worst between 9 and 13 weeks so I'm buggered haha!!!

It sounds like you might have hypermesis gravidarum. If you're vomiting that much I'm assuming you're not able to keep much down? You're at risk of dehydration and ketosis, I don't think a wait to see the doctor is wise, I don't even think you should wait til Monday. Please call 111 and they should advise you, hopefully get you an appointment with an out of hours GP.

I had severe nausea and ending up needing emergency IV.

Tails5290 · 13/06/2019 16:52

Thank you, I'm sick after eating and drinking but it's only a few mouthfuls each time so I'm assuming something is staying down. I've been vomiting for the last 6/7 days and today I am struggling to stand up without getting tunnel vision so maybe I'm not taking in as much water as I was hoping. I've just tried the drs but will try again

It sounds like you might be getting dehydrated. Honestly call 111 and they will help you get seen today. They ideally need to do a urine sample asap

Tails5290 · 13/06/2019 16:56

Thank you daisymay I'm waiting for a callback off the dr

You poor thing. I have this too and it's so awful.

Like others have said Cariban is really good, but doesn't get rid of it completely, but definitely takes the edge off.

Only thing is it is really expensive. It's 50 Euro for a weeks supply, it's absolutely crazy. You can get it much cheaper in Spain though, if you know anyone over there.

My sympathies to you, look after yourself as best you can xx

Pregnancy Sickness Support is very helpful.

BikeRunSki · 13/06/2019 17:19

You sound like you have hyperemisis. It’s hideous and totally blighted both my pregnancies. It’s horrid, poor you. Hope your GP is helpful. They can, but won’t always, prescribe anti Sickness medication. There are several to try. For me, it didn’t stop the nausea, but allowed me to keep down small amounts of fluid. Unfortunately i had to have it by drip in hospital, and was hospitalised for this and dehydration several times in both pg. I sucked ice cubes and licked ice lollies to stay hydrated at my worst.

Tails5290 · 13/06/2019 17:48

I'm just so confused why I suddenly have such bad ms on my 4th pregnancy. The other 3 were a breeze compared to this. I'm getting ice lollies in the morning for sure. I've actually just ate about 10 chips and so far I have not been sick (it's been 15 minutes) so fingers crossed i can keep these down and the energy boost will keep me going until the morning GrinGrin

Get some keytone sticks from the pharmacy. If you are getting ++ on them go to the doctors. I could have kissed the practice nurse when she checked my keytones and promptly phoned up the hospital and told them to expect me. It meant that finally someone would do something that would make me feel better. Essentially the keytone sticks can tell you if you are burning your fat reserves for energy because you aren't getting enough calories from your food. Great if you are trying to loose weight but not so good if you are pregnant and throwing up all your food. There is a running thread on Mumsnet full of lovely people who can give you lots of advice on HG.

DeadDoorpost · 13/06/2019 17:55

Hi! Definitely sounds like Hyperemesis. If the Dr doesn't do anything, 111 or straight to hospital for fluids. Let them know you're pregnant.

The 8-10 weeks can be the worst, just to let you know, then can get a lot better as there's a hormone surge then. And another one about 20 weeks as well, but isn't usually as bad.

And Every time you throw up, count it, so if you throw up once but you threw up something 6 times then that counts as being sick 6 times. My worst day was a minimum of 60 times, 15 vomiting sessions.

(And sometimes, serious sickness in a consecutive pregnancy for the first time can mean twins... Just saying!!)

Hope you feel better soon

Tails5290 · 13/06/2019 18:27

Thanks all for your messages. I will go to pharmacy tomorrow and also have to call in the morning to get dr appt. fingers crossed it settles down a bit after 10 weeks, i can't imagine this lasting my whole pregnancy. And I have this gut feeling it might be twins, hoping I'm wrong though Confused

megletthesecond · 13/06/2019 18:32

It is indeed crap Flowers.
They'll almost certainly give you medication for it. My GP gave me a telling off when I said I could only keep ice cubes down, funnily enough it's not enough to sustain anyone Blush.

Hope you feel much better in 24hrs and can keep something down.

Tails5290 · 13/06/2019 18:53

Thank you. Tomorrow is a new day and I have unrealistic optimism that today was just a really bad day Grin

I've been chewing on herbal sweets and mints when I'm on car journeys, I don't like throwing up in front of my kids if I can help it. I feel like I'm over reacting but I will go to drs tomorrow, and see what they say/advice.

ivyleaf4 · 13/06/2019 22:40

@tails5290 it can be a sign of twins... are your other DCs boys or girls?

justilou1 · 13/06/2019 22:46

I had hyperemesis for both of my pregnancies... surprisingly (slightly) worse with DD1 than with DTs. I wouldn’t leave it too long. Dehydration causes all kinds of issues. (You kind of need your kidneys to be in good working order!) If you can’t get to GP, go to a&e.... sorry! Oh, and none of the shit about ginger (which I normally love, btw) or crackers, etc helped me. I ate bloody white rice, sucked on frozen berries, learned that watermelon can come out your nose at a rapid velocity (my kids are teens and I can barely look watermelon in the face now) at 2am, that you can be ferociously hungry and not be able to eat a damn thing, etc..... oh.... and still be capable of putting on a bajillion pounds despite this. Thank you fluid retention. My plans for an all natural, yoga-inspired, goddess-like pregnancy were scuppered about five minutes from conception when I couldn’t get my head out of the toilet and felt like I was on a wildly rocking ship in roiling, stormy seas. I hope you feel better ASAP!!!

Tails5290 · 14/06/2019 08:25

I have two boys and a girl. I had worse food and smell aversions when pregnant with dd but this time it's a whole other level. I hate the smell of everything and anything sets the vomiting off. I'm hoping today was a bad day as I feel slightly better this morning. I've been sick a lot already but I've managed to male the beds and sort the washing, I still need to speak to a dr about my kidney pain though. If it's twins I really don't know what I'll do (well I'll suck it up and get on with it but you know what I mean). Currently eating boiled rice while sat next to the sick bucket, oh my glamorous life!!!

Doctors have been great and have prescribed me some anti sickness tablets. Also I have a UTI so have a course of antibiotics, hopefully will start feeling better in a few days

OP posts:
DeadDoorpost · 14/06/2019 13:55

The UTI probably makes the sickness worse, I k ow it did for me. Once it's cleared up it should be a bit more bearable but I'm glad you've got some anti emetics!

Tails5290 · 14/06/2019 18:46

Fingers crossed then that will help things SmileSmile
