ECV for breech baby. Experiences?

The only person I know who had one ended up having an emergency section due to fetal distress so I'm very put off. I am aware that it just one persons experience though. Anyone on here had one and willing to share their experience?

This was meant to be in pregnancy. I have asked MN to move.

I had one at 37wks. I discussed beforehand that I wasn't willing for it to be very forceful and the consultant said she didn't believe in doing it forcefully if there was a lot of resistance. I felt reassured by this.

DD was resolute about staying head up so it was unsuccessful.

Despite not wanting a C section I then had no choice as DD was footling breach and I have to say it was a really positive experience, so much so that if my next baby were breach I wouldn't bother with the ECV as I feel very accepting of having a c section again.

Midwife thought my baby was breech (had a scan and turned out she wsnt) but said she doesn't recommend it as she had one and so had the student midwife in the room they both said very uncomfortable and both babies turned back breech anyway! But ofcourse it is choice x

Thanks for the info. I'm 34 weeks but midwife said to start considering options and in two weeks if he hasn't moved we'll have to make a decision. I really don't want a section or an ECV so hoping he starts behaving. He's been breech consistently until 33 weeks when he went head and down and 2/5 engaged, until I went back in yesterday and he was breech again 🙈 he's obviously very comfy..

Hi @Nobhobs
I'm also 34 weeks and baby is breech too!
He's been breech on my last couple of midwife appointments and I'm being sent for another scan at 36 to check if he is definitely breech. I'm very much in the same boat as you - not keen on the sound of the turning the baby around bit.. sounds very uncomfortable! Also nervous about potentially having a C Section!!!
Let me know how you get on.

Following as lo has been transverse the entire pregnancy! I have a scan in a few weeks because placenta is low but they think it has moved enough so if lo is still transverse they are recommending ecv - I’m the same - I don’t want a section OR ECV :(

We tried it but they literally did a couple of light pushes on her and quickly and decisively told me that she wasn't going to budge. I liked the fact that they didn't try to force it or keep trying to do it differently, or give me the option to keep going or try again - literally just went 'No, she's going nowhere. Let's talk about your options.'

I had one at 36 weeks. Was my second baby and they were not keen on a vaginal breech delivery (and I wasn’t keen on a section) The consultant who did it had an extremely high success rate in second time + mums and gave me a lot of confidence. Was a quick injection to relax the womb, a very odd but not painful few minutes and a turned baby. I was monitored for an hour afterwards and went on to have a natural water birth. I read a lot of scary stories - and nearly didn’t have it done, but am so pleased I did. I would try it again if this baby is breech.

I had one with DC2 at 37 weeks IIRC. It was done by a doctor who was training to do ECVs and it was his first time. I think it helped that I had a lot of water and she wasn't engaged, but it took no more than 30 seconds. The consultant said it was the quickest she'd ever seen!
I had been very unsure beforehand and had all the possible complications running through my mind for weeks. I'd decided I wouldn't let it carry on if it felt too much but it was ok. Definitely uncomfortable and made me feel a bit queasy but it was ok.
That evening she moved LOADS and I was convinced she'd moved back, but she was actually head down and I had a straight forward birth at 41+4.

I'm now 31+5 with DC3 and he's also breech atm so I'm thinking it could be a similar experience, but I'm much less nervous this time.

I had one but was too late (37/38 weeks) and baby was big. Like people have said above they tried and said there was no chance he was turning. I went into labour naturally about a week later and had an emergency csection. Currently pregnant again and really hoping this one isn’t going to be breech :-/

blackcat86 · 16/06/2019 07:50

DD turned to breech at 37 weeks. She was quite small and they were a bit worried about her anyway so the consultant flat out refused EVC and got the consent forms for a c section for exactly 38 weeks. He said there was too high of a risk of baby getting distressed and most go back to their favourite positions anyway.

MilkItTilITurnItIntoCheese · 16/06/2019 07:54

I had one. Was a weird experience. They said it worked. I went into labour naturally at 39 weeks but ended up with an emergency cs as she got stuck. Her head was in the wrong position. Of course we don’t know if she had moved again following the move or if it wasn’t 100% successful after all. With hindsight I would have booked a CS as it would have been easier to manage a planned one but I was trying to avoid as had older children.
