Low amniotic fluid

Hi ladies

I went in over the weekend with reduced movements - which was all ok thankfully, but they measured me and told me they need to send me for a scan, as I’m measuring small. No problem I’ve had this in my two other pregnancy’s so wasn’t even a bit surprised!

Well I had my scan baby’s fine just a little on the small side but my fluid is low 8cm total and deepest pocket 2.7cm!!!

Now I’m getting my self really worked up, no one is really telling me what this means. Ive read that I might be induced! But I’m only 32 weeks!!!! I do have another scan and consultant app in two weeks time! So will be 34 weeks then! I don’t think I will be able to last that long! I’m driving myself crazy!! 😂

Anyone in a similar/has been in a similar situation I’m all ears!! 😂

How much water do you drink? I was told aminotic fluid and water intake are linked by several consultants - not sure how correct it is, but maybe try to drink more and see if that helps even temporarily?

You're on the low side of normal levels. Drink LOTS of water.

Thank you! I did ask is there anything I can do and was told no, it is what it is? Hmm

I will definitely drink more water! Would like to keep baby in for as long as possible!

I had this, I can't remember the measurements though for my daughter. I was already having growth scans because she had stopped growing and then all of a sudden she had very little amniotic fluid left. We was transferred and she was delivered by c section at 31+5.

Unfortunately there isn't really anything you can do other than just be really vigilant on baby's movements. Do you have monitoring in between the scans?

Mamaofdrama · 13/06/2019 20:32

@JuniperNarni Thank you!

That’s what I’m worrying about! Like I said nothing has really been said other that mumblings in inducing early.. I completely understand it’s a “we will have to wait and see thing” I’m not having monitoring between but they did say keep an eye on them, I’ve already had two episodes of reduced/no movement but heartbeat etc were are good thankfully! Sorry a bit of a ramble! Grin just can’t stand the not knowing!

I can completely understand that. I would perhaps ask them for more monitoring or scans.

I was being scanned once a week and monitored twice by appointment (took myself in with reduced movements much more) but it never feels like enough. I was an anxious wreck.

Otherwise I think I would phone my midwife and ask if she can find out what the plan is from the doctor you probably saw. I understand you don't have the static growth too but ours made it very clear our aim was 34 weeks but anything could happen beforehand. It isn't the best gestation ever but I knew to be prepared and had a goal.

I’m 24 weeks with twins (so slightly different circumstances) and have lower amniotic fluid for one than the other - deepest pocket for lower one is 2.5cms compared to 4.7cms for other one. Sonographer and Dr said that it can also be linked to size of placenta and, in my case, the smaller volume is the twin with the smaller placenta so could well be linked. I was also advised to keep my hydration levels up as it may help.

DreamFever · 14/06/2019 06:44

I had a growth scan with DC3 when I was 28 weeks, and that showed low amniotic fluids - can’t remember how low exactly, but low enough to be a worry. The sonographer checked it about 4 times. Baby was also measuring small, between 5th and 10th centile.

I worried myself silly googling it. The doctors booked me in for another growth scan in 2 weeks and sent me home with instructions to keep a close eye on baby’s movements.

And then when I went for the next growth scan, the amniotic fluid was at a normal level. It was the strangest thing, no one could explain what had been going on to me.

Growth scans continued fortnightly due to baby’s size though, I ended up being induced at 37 weeks because the previous scan showed no growth (i had to wait a few days after the scan for the next available induction slot). Amniotic fluid levels were reported as being normal for all the other scans.

Thank you everyone! Baby is on the small side (other two dd were 6lbs full term) but baby is still plotting on “right” on my graph, they did say it’s growth is starting to level out? Which I can see from my notes, again no one really concerned. @DreamFever your experience sounds very similar to mine, I think I’ll have another chat with my midwife. Thank you all
