Anyone been caseloaded before?

I had a letter from a student midwife who was at my first ever apt (along with a trained midwife) asking if she could caseload me. The letter says she would arrange my care and be at all apts and will be under the guidance of a trained midwife.

Has anyone had experience of this before? Good or bad. Not sure what i should do. My sister in law is a midwife and said that they try to please and you get really good 121 care.

Not from a student midwife but I was under the care of a caseloading team with my first pregnancy and it was absolutely gold-standard, with continuity of care right up to and including the birth and postnatal.

I've been taken on by a student midwife for her caseload and it hasn't really affected my care very much to be honest. She was at my booking appointment, 20 week scan, and has been at two other midwife appointments since then too. The qualified midwives do all the work to be honest, and anything that the student midwife does is repeated by someone qualified. I'm happy enough to be taken on as a caseload if it helps someone to learn, and I'm still getting the best care. I would go for it to be honest!

My first baby was delivered by a student midwife (who was chaperoned by a senior midwife).

She was amazing I had multiple pregnancy/birthing issues which is probably the reason I was chosen (throwing her in at the deep end) however, as she was so scared to miss things I was check checked and checked again it put my mind at ease more to be honest! I loved her!

I had a student midwife caseload me when I was pregnant with my twins. It was great to have a consistent face at the majority of my appointments, apart from her I never saw the same person twice in a row. She was there for the birth and also in hospital afterwards which was the best bit - she was more able to follow up on test results, sort out a breastpump and things like that, plus she had more time available to spend helping me.

My baby was primarily delivered by a student midwife who was almost qualified (monitored by a more experienced one) and it was great as the two of them didn't leave the room for the entire labour so all it meant for us is that we got more 121 attention. As others have said, it actually means they're potentially more thorough than a more experienced person as they don't want to miss anything when they're being assessed. Post birth as the student just had us she was happy to stay with us and help with things like feeding and changing the first nappies, which was appreciated given we didn't have a clue. Other students shadowed my (many) appointments too and again I was happy for that to happen, I work in a uni with students so felt it would be hypocritical of me to say no and as I was automatically high risk due to prior medical conditions they had a lot of learnings.

That sounds great! It just means that while they’re still in training they take you on as their patient, but everything will also be checked by a qualified midwife so there’s no risk to you.

I think if you want the benefits of being cared for by a qualified midwife you can’t really fairly say no to allowing trainees to participate in your care, otherwise you’d never have anyone to care for you if the women before you had refused.

My dc2 was delivered by a student midwife with supervision and she was amazing. I was 6 hours discharge and she stayed with me the whole time, she checked everything twice and made sure I got a good supply of tea and toast.

I was caseloaded with my first and the 121 care she provided was so lovely. She had kids of her own so was concerned she might not make it to my labour. DD took her sweet time to arrive, so she did make it and she really took care of us in the recovery room after the EMCS knocked me for 6!

She was a great link between the hospital team and my partner who was waiting on the labour ward following the EMCS, so he was given regular updates on our progress.

Definitely a good experience for us. I'd recommend it to anyone.
