Safe to travel by Eurostar? How far gone would you travel?

I am currently 28 weeks and have been asked to travel to Paris for a meeting in the next few weeks (some time before end July)

I would be travelling by Eurostar, a journey I have made many times before for work so familiar and comfortable.

Can anyone advise on how late you’d leave it to go and if there are any restrictions similar to airline policies?

This is my first pregnancy and so far it’s been super easy and low-risk.

Eurostar [URL=help.eurostar.com/faq/uk-en/question/Can-I-travel-on-Eurostar-if-I-m-pregnant says there are no restrictions].

I would travel as long as I felt comfortable doing so - I'd probably be willing to do a trip like that up to about 34 weeks provided I had good insurance to cover me in Europe. So in your shoes I'd have no problems going. I continued travelling by train around the UK for work until about 34-35 weeks in my first pregnancy.

Oops, cocked up the link. Anyway:

I have a similar question. Not so much about travelling on the Eurostar, but about insurance. I'll be travelling to Marseille on the Eurostar and then to Barcelona, staying 9 days overall, at 29/30 weeks. I was planning to just take my EHIC card after reading from several sources that it also covers pregnancy-related emergencies (including birth).

My question, has anyone used the EHIC for such emergencies while in France or in Spain? Was it OK?

Thanks

Do not rely on the EHIC: I heard a horror story from someone who went into early labour on holiday (it was either Spain or Portugal) Baby was in hospital for seven weeks, mother discharged after a few days: they had to pay for a hotel for her for all that time, the father had to go back to work and fly over and back at weekends, there were more details I can't remember but it financially crippled them.

I've done my last flight at 32 weeks and had no issues. I'm also doing a long car journey at 35 weeks as well.

Biggest thing about foreign travel is insurance. Do not rely on EHIC

@Sandrine1982 I checked with my insurer and advised I get written confirmation that I am safe to travel from my GP, in case I did have to make a claim. My GP tried to charge me for a Fit to Fly letter but instead I insisted she just wrote it in my notes, and printed these off. This should be sufficient and hopefully you wont need it anyway!

@PugPupsMum Im pretty sure you need a fit to fly letter from experience - to describe the whole pregnancy including a signature. I hope they don't stop you from flying! Good luck!

EHIC will cover your healthcare but it will not cover related expenses such as extended hotel stays, changing flights home etc. I’m also not sure that it would cover care for the baby which can run into five figures plus if born prematurely.

I would definitely get travel insurance and check that the baby will be covered as well.

As far as Eurostar goes you’ll be fine - you haven’t got the same risks of cramped leg space, difficulty moving around etc. as you do on a plane and you’re never very far from medical assistance should you feel unwell.

Sandrine1982 · 13/06/2019 09:48

That's true, I haven't thought of other non-medical expenses like the hotel etc.

What insurance would you recommend?
